All of a sudden, everything happened in a speed of light.
Emilia was pregnant. How could Bucky leave her behind knowing this? Never in a million years would he had left her and his child alone.
A few weeks ago, he was already thinking about what was going on with her. The symptoms were clear. Yet she had never said anything. She couldn't, because she didn't know it herself already.
Now he had the certainty. And this mixed with the irrepressible joy and desire to protect his little world with everything he had, fired the adrenaline through his body.
Bucky grabbed the steel, swung his legs up and wrapped them tightly around it so he had enough grip. Growling with great effort, he tried one more time to free himself from the chains.
Before Jackson knew it, the broken steel links fell into the fire. Not so the man he wanted to see burning in it.
Just inches from the hole, Bucky landed on his feet and rolled off. Like a berserker with unglamorous energy, he ran at his target.
Emilia didn't know what was happening until he charged past the glass box toward Jackson. The latter tried to dodge, but failed. He hit the wall in a high arc, crashed down and came to the ground.
His phone flew out of one of his pockets. Bucky rushed towards it. He had witnessed Jackson testing the prison for Mia over and over again in the last few days.
It didn't take him long to find what he was looking for on the display. With a click, the walls around her fell to the ground.
"GO! GET OUTTA HERE!"
She refused to comply with Bucky's breathless demand. She would never leave him behind. When he saw that Emilia didn't move, the tone of his voice changed to desperation.
"Please, my Love... bring both of you somewhere safe."
He was talking about her and the little creature that was growing inside her. Only then did she truly understand that he didn't want to lose the little one either, any more than she did.
That realization flooded her in that split second with an unprecedented devotion for the man who would unhinge the entire world to protect her and their beautiful little miracle.
Bucky looked into the face he wanted to cherish for all eternity. The loving expression in it showed him once again that she never wanted him to leave. She certainly didn't want to hurt him the way she had.
When suddenly the sheer horror showed in Emlilia's eyes, he followed them and turned around. She was still trying to warn him, but by then Jackson was already behind im again.
"LOOK OUT!"
He could just hear her voice before he felt the numbing pain drive through his muscles. The electric waves jerked him to the ground, unable to move. But not for long.
With a single gust of wind, Emilia hurled Jackson several feet through the air. She rushed toward Bucky, who was still crouched on the ground, twitching slightly.
"Hey, are you okay?"
She reached for his face to make sure he wasn't badly hurt. He put his warm hand on one of hers and gave it a quick squeeze.
"Yeah. Where is he?" Looking around, Bucky gathered himself up with her arm around his chest. Jackson was nowhere to be seen. He was gone.
The brief relief of that settled like heavy stones on Bucky's arms and legs.
