A broken howl from a werewolf suddenly filled their ears, Derek turning his head slightly toward the sound,

"Scott?" Derek asked

"What?" Stiles asked, looking at him

"Scott's in trouble" Nova replied

Without a second thought, Nova stepped into the circle and ran into the building, much to the surprise of Stiles. The redhead's speed had sharply increased, moving through the halls of the building with ease as she made her way toward Scott, wanting to do what she could to help him. As she ran, she didn't know that her nails were extending, much like like Irina's had when she pulled them out of the pool. But Nova's seemed to be slightly longer. It didn't take her long to find the room, her foot making contact with the door, which flew off it's hinges and crashed into the wall across from it. She could tell that there was something different in the air, smelling it with ease, whipping around, letting her hand wrap around a wrist that was holding a knife, a smirk forming on her lips.

"Hi, Mrs. Argent" Nova greeted "stay away from my friends"

A hard punch landed in the older woman jaw, fracturing it with the strength the teenager had carried, Derek entering the room, which allowed Nova to go to Scott. Derek managed to knock the knife from the hunters hand, but in the end, he had been thrown toward Scott and Nova, allowing her to get away while he was distracted.

"We got to get out of here" Nova said "whatever is in the air is also affecting you"

Derek gave her a small nod, getting up on his feet and pulling Scott out of the room, Nova following behind him, her talons had retracted when punching Allison's mother.

They made it to the clinic, Scott was laying on the metal table with Deaton looking him over, Derek and Nova sitting at the other side of the room,

". . Thank you" the alpha spoke up

Deaton looked back at him, giving him a small nod before walking out of the room, Nova pulling her phone out of her pocket when it vibrated, seeing that she had a text from Irina, and a text from Stiles, and one from Erica,

From: Gran
- How did it go?

From: Nova
- Not so good
- I'll tell you about it tomorrow

From: Gran
- I'll be working late tonight
- Tell me about it after school

Nova started calling her Gran a few days ago, getting used to being in Beacon Hills and living with the older woman. And Irina was over the moon when she heard her new name, since her biological brothers called her Granny, which had made her feel so old. She put her phone back in her pocket after reading the other messages, letting out a tired sigh as she leaned back against the wall next to Derek,

"Stiles is going to swing by and pick up Scott" Nova informed "your betas are at the station, Boyd's better and I could go for a pizza" looking at Derek "how about you?"

". . Sausage and mushroom?" He asked

"With wings" she smiled

The two of them were happily eating pizza and barbecue wings, Derek watching as Nova placed her hand over the small flame of her lighter, the fire licking her skin, but not hurting her in any way. She slowly closed her hand over the small flame, picking it up and lowering the lighter, slowly turning rotating her hand, opening it and watching as the fire spread on her hand. It licked the skin of her palm and fingers, a small smile forming on her lips, Derek looking at her with fascination in his eyes,

Derek had met Irina before, but he had never witnessed the power of a phoenix, and something was telling him that Nova was going to be much stronger than her grandmother. It's common for a phoenix to be trained by one of their own, rare for one to train on their own, and since Irina worked most of the time, Nova didn't want to bother her. The teen was used to figuring things out on her own, occasionally asking for help when she absolutely needed it, and she was sure that she'd figure out how to completely control her abilities.

". . Are you up for a sparring session at your old place?" She asked, looking at Derek "not tonight, obviously. But one of these days?"

"What, you think you can take me down?" He teased, a smirk forming on his lips

"Only one way to find out" a smirk forming on her own lips

Nova closed her hand, which had extinguished the fire, which went away completely when she reopened it. With that hand, she reached for another slice of pizza, picking it up and taking a bite, leaning back against the headboard. Lots of people noticed that Derek and Nova were hanging out a lot more than usual, he would insist on driving her home, or anywhere she needed to go, not wanting anyone to do it and he had even started helping her fix up her car. She had become a little more happier to be in Beacon Hills, still missing her old house, but it was getting better for her. Derek somehow made some of the pain go away whenever he was around and it didn't matter what they were doing, whether he was training his betas or when they were all trying to catch the kanima. He was helping her and he didn't even know it.

A sketchbook was in her lap, pencil in her free hand as the lead grazed the paper, drawing a picture of something that was very familiar,

"What's that?" Derek asked, curiosity in his voice as he looked at the drawing

"A tattoo my mom had on her leg" Nova replied "I want to get it, but I'm adding my own twist on it to make it a little more . . original. For their memory, so I won't forget them"

"They may not have been blood, but they were your family" looking at her "some things may fade over time, but you'll never forget who they were and how much they loved you"
