Sticky spring like air attached itself to Maeve's bare arms, her white converse crunching along the pavement as she made her way down the road towards her mums house, and of course, also Dec's house. Mason was away in Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup, leaving the girl bored out of her brains. She'd been lucky that Jack, Sasha, Lauren, Dec and John had been with her pretty much constantly, aswell as Ben who unfortunately had been too injured to endure the trip. But today, they all had something somewhere to do, and Maeve was lonely. Of course, she could have driven hers or Masons cars to her mums, but it was only a ten minute walk and it was a lovely day. Atleast, it was when she'd set off. By second, rain drops began to thud on the pavement, the comforting smell of wetness on the warm pavement becoming apparent.

Moments had passed when Maeve found herself stepping down the driveway of the familiar family home.
"Hello?" She called, closing the door shut behind her.
"Mousey!" Jade squealed, running through the living room door and wrapping straight around her legs.
"Hey baby, look how much you've grown!" Maeve smiled, pulling the child off the floor. She was visibly more grown up now, and Maeve's body felt this as she twinged, pulling the child up to her waist.
"What are you doing here, cretin?" Was what she heard next, Declan plodding down the stairs with his middle finger raised.
"You having mase withdrawal symptoms too, Dec?" She raised her eyebrows, joking about his foul mood. He rolled his eyes playfully, nodding as he did.
"Where's mum?" Maeve asked.
"In the garden getting the washing in. Come out and play some footie with me?" Dec asked watching as his step sister placed Jade back down on her feet, letting her run back into the living room where she had been colouring.
"Fine. But only because I'm bored," Mouse rolled her eyes, following her step brother through the house and towards the patio door.
"Hey mum!" Maeve smiled as they entered the garden, the lady carrying the grey washing basket under one arm, the other used to sweep her shoulder length silver hair behind her ear.
"Maeve! Do you want a drink?" Her mum asked through a smile, placing a kiss on her forehead as she walked over.
"I'd love a coffee, please mum. Here, let me help," Maeve took the washing basket off her and followed her inside with it, leaving Dec to practice his shooting whilst he waited.

"Right if you hit the crossbar then I'll give you a hundred, no word of a lie," Dec offered his hand to the girl to shake as a deal, smirking as he placed the ball at her feet. They'd been playing for about half an hour already and unlike her husband, her brother and her friendship group, Maeve wasn't built as a footballer. She was exhausted already. But she couldn't miss this opportunity.
"Deal," she shook his hand, watching him move to the side of the garden in preparation for her to kick the ball. And with a deep breath, her foot attached to the ball as she sent it flying straight towards the cross bar, leaving Declan with a dropped jaw.
"Fair play, Mase has been teaching you well," He pretentiously clapped, causing the girl to laugh. She was enjoying herself, when out of nowhere she felt another sharp twinge down her body, specifically her stomach.
"Ouch," she gasped, her breath almost taken away.
"What've you done?" Dec turned from the goal to face her, a queried look on his face.
"Must have pulled a muscle in my stomach, it's suddenly started hurting," she cupped her stomach with her arm, gulping as she did.
"Idiot, of course you have. Come on, let's go and sit down," Dec walked towards her, taking her arm in his as he almost dragged her across the now sodden patio, occasional rumbles of thunder in the distance.

Maeve sat between Dec and her mum on the sofa, Jade on the opposite one with her dad as the movie rolled on. Everyone laughed, enjoying the Disney scene on the TV. But Maeve would have been lying if she said she didn't feel slightly distracted. Her stomach throbbed, a sickening feeling in her mouth. She regretted drinking her coffee just before playing football, after all that's all it would have been, she thought.

On queue, Declan slapped his hand under the blanket on Maeve's shin that was over his lap.
"You ok?" He whispered.
"Feel abit sick, your fault for making me play too much football," she chuckled quietly, resting her head back on her mums shoulder.
"Why don't you stay here for the night? Then you can go and get yourself into bed and rest," her mum responded, with a soft caring nature. Maeve nodded, agreeing and thanking her.
"Your old bedroom is still free, you can sleep in there," Karen smiled as her daughter pulled herself off the sofa, her phone in hand. She'd felt it vibrate a couple of times, assumably from her Mason, but she didn't have the energy to check it. Declan watched her with a close eye as she walked to the door, almost stumbling as she did, her face as white as paper. Something wasn't right.

The clock of Maeve's iPhone told her it was almost 2 am when she awoke in the blackness of the night, her body trembling in cold sweats and her stomach sending shooting pains through her. She tossed and turned, hunching over and rolling around relentlessly, but to no avail. She didn't feel good at all. With a sigh, she popped her feet onto the beige carpet and pulled her dressing gown over her from the end of the bed, before creeping out of the darkness of her room and onto the landing. Tip toe-ing past the bedrooms, she finally reached Dec's, where she let herself in with no delay. Luckily, he was still awake as he sat on the end of his bed playing fifa.
"What are You doing up?" He removed his headset and placed it around his neck, his eyes moving from the screen to the girl.
"I can't sleep. I don't feel well at all, Dec. And I want Mason," she huffed, flopping herself on his bed.
"He's back tomorrow, Im sure you can manage until then, can't you?!" He giggled, flopping backwards on the bed with her so their heads were touching as they lay staring at the ceiling. She sighed, relishing this thought as she closed her eyes tight. But seconds later, they sprung back open in a hurry.
"I'm going to be sick," she announced, leaping up from the bed and into Dec's en-suite.
"Shh, you're ok," he hushed as he held her hair out of the way. She was truly so blessed to have him as a step brother. Not only was he the reason for her to meet her husband, but he truly was her best friend, her platonic soul mate.
