THE FOLLOWING DAY, I FOUND MYSELF transfixed by the dancing flames of the active fireplace, my eyes gleaming gold in the flickering light. I was nestled comfortably on the couch in the living room, surrounded by a peaceful silence that was only occasionally interrupted by the faint sounds of the outside world.

As I gazed into the fire, my mind began to wander, replaying the phone conversations I had with Bella and Ayla. I couldn't help but wonder why Bella had sounded so strange when we discussed the topic of children and vampire-human DNA. And who had Jacob imprinted on? Could there be a connection between these seemingly unrelated events?

Suddenly, I was jolted out of my thoughts by Rhona's voice calling out to me. I turned my head to see her and Joseph approaching me, leaning over the couch with curious expressions on their faces.

"What are you up to, Vi?" Joseph inquired.

"Just resting and thinking," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.

"Resting from what?" Rhona teased. "Watching the fireplace? And here I thought I was the odd one."

Joseph chuckled and added, "And we can't forget those mysterious phone calls you've been having. So, what's the scoop?"

I cursed myself for forgetting that they both had powers of their own. It seemed that I couldn't keep anything hidden from my supernatural friends.

Rhona and Joseph's eyes widened in disbelief as they looked at me. I could feel the weight of their judgment bearing down on me like a ton of bricks. My heart raced as I tried to come up with an explanation for my association with a shapeshifter.

Rhona's soft stare turned into a piercing gaze as she wrapped her arm around mine. Her golden eyes glowed with an otherworldly intensity, and for a moment, I felt like I was staring into the eyes of a goddess. But then her eyes turned blank, and she stood there like a statue, lost in thought.

When her eyes returned to normal, she looked at me with a mixture of shock and disbelief. "You were friends with a shapeshifter?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Jacob, that's his name, right?"

I could feel the weight of her words crushing me, and I struggled to find the right words to say. "Rhona, please," I begged, my voice barely audible.

Joseph looked at me with a mixture of confusion and anger. "What?" he asked. "Why didn't you tell us about that?"

I took a deep breath and tried to explain myself. "In all honesty, I didn't know he was a wolf," I whispered to Rhona. "And second, I was thinking about my conversation with Bella..."

"About vampire-human DNA," Rhona finished my sentence, her eyes still fixed on me.

I was stunned. "Ro, how did you know?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"I just went into your memories," she said matter-of-factly.

I felt a chill run down my spine as I realised the full extent of Rhona's powers. She was more than just a pretty face; she was a force to be reckoned with. And as I looked at her and Joseph, I knew that I had a lot of explaining to do.

"Wait a minute," Joseph interjected, his voice cutting through the hushed tones of our conversation. "Why are we whispering?"

We all froze, caught off guard by his sudden interruption. But as I thought about it, I realised he had a point. Why were we whispering?

Rhona was the first to respond, her voice barely above a whisper. "So Gabriel won't hear us," she explained.

"But he's not even here," Joseph pointed out, his own voice hushed.
