The Protector

The Pollywog Part 1

Maddie was woken up from her wonderful night by someone rummaging through her room. She opened her eyes slowly seeing Jonathan going through her room. "What are you doing?", Maddie mumbled quietly. "Hey Mads. I'm sorry to wake you, but Mom lost her keys", Jonathan answered with a smile. "I'll help you look, just give me a second", Maddie said while rubbing her eyes. 

Maddie quickly got dressed and exited her room. "Jesus. Have you seen them?", Joyce questioned as she looked through the couch cushions. "We're looking, Mom", Jonathan said. "Yeah, we're... we're looking", Will added. "Good morning Mads", Joyce said with a small smile seeing Maddie walk into the living room. "Good morning Mom", Maddie mumbled with a tiny smile. 

"A-ha! Found 'em", Bob said walking out of Joyce's room chuckling casing the older teens eyes to widen in shock. "Oh!", Joyce stated relieved walking towards Bob. "Hiding under some jeans, sneaky little buggers", Bob said. "Thank you. Thank you. You're a life savor" Joyce told Bob. "Can you take Will to school today? I can not be late again", Joyce asked Jonathan. 

"He's staying over now?", Jonathan questioned Joyce. "Can you just take Will, please?", Joyce asked Jonathan dismissing his remark. Before Maddie can intervene, Bob stated, "I can take him". "Will you make sure he gets in okay?", Joyce questioned only for Bob to reply, "Yeah of course. What do you say, big guy? Wanna go for a ride in the Bobmobile?". Will looks at Maddie who nodded slightly causing Will to start getting his things together. "And I'm picking him up from AV club today correct?", Maddie asked receiving a hug from Joyce and a "thank you" before Joyce ran out the door. 

"I'm going to head in early today", Maddie said before grabbing her keys. "Okay, I'll see you later", Jonathan responded. "I love you!", Maddie shouted walking out hearing a small "I love you too" in return. Once Maddie got into her car, she decided that she was going to skip her normal pit stop and go directly to the police station. 

Maddie walked in giving Flo a small smile before going into the main room. Maddie saw Hopper and walked angrily towards him. "We need to talk", Maddie said to Hopper walking past him into Hopper's office. "Now's not a great time", Hopper stated not being able to stop Maddie from entering his office. Hopper let out a small sigh before reluctantly following Maddie into his office and shutting the door. 

"Where have you been?!", Maddie questioned angrily. "I've been working late recently", Hopper answered causing Maddie to chuckle dryly. "Really?", Maddie asked. "Yes, we were out late last night dealing with a case you can ask Flo", Hopper replied. "And what about the two nights before that?", Maddie questioned. "I was working late Mads", Hopper sighed out. 

"Well according to Flo, you have been leaving work even earlier than usual lately. So, why are you lying? And what are you hiding?", Maddie asked Hopper fuming. "I'm not hiding anything Mads! Just leave it alone!", Hopper replied. "Why do you keep lying?", Maddie questioned Hopper angrily. "Listen Mads, I need to get back to work and you need to go to school. So just leave it be", Hopper said before leaving the room leaving a very frustrated Maddie alone in his office. 

Maddie arrived to school like she always did and she saw Billy waiting at his car. When Maddie pulled into her spot she saw Billy looking at her with a small smile on his face. Maddie got out of the car while Billy started to walk towards her. "Hey, Addie", Billy stated happily. "Hey Bills",  Maddie said quietly. "Are you okay?", Billy asked Maddie worriedly. "Yeah, I just had a rough morning", Maddie stated with an unconvincing smile. Instead of questioning Maddie more, Billy decided to drop it before starting the walk into school.

"So do you play any sports?", Maddie asked Billy curiously. "I play basketball", Billy responded. "Oh, yeah. Don't you guys have practice today?", Maddie questioned before adding, "Steve does basketball so I usually know when the team practices". "Yeah we have practice after school", Billy said before adding, "Do you want to come watch?". 

"Hmmm, that depends. Are you going to be a shirt or a skin?", Maddie asked in a joking tone with a large smirk on her face. "Well, I guess that will depends on you", Billy responded in the same tone. "Well in that case, consider me there", Maddie said with a playful smile. "Great", Billy responded with a smile before the bell rang signaling to the teens that they needed to head to class. "I'll see you later, Addie", Billy said before giving Maddie a quick kiss on the cheek before walking towards his class leaving a giddy Maddie behind. 

After the school day passed extremely slow, Maddie made her way to the gym. She walked into the gym to see the teams were not out of the locker room yet. Maddie started to climb up the bleachers before securing a good spot in the middle of the bleachers. Just as she sat down the two separate teams exited the locker room. 

Steve came out wearing a shirt looking up at the bleachers surprised when he saw Maddie. Steve made eye contact with Maddie with an apologetic look before Maddie looked away. As the rest of the boys came out, Billy looked into the stands hoping to see Maddie. He finally made eye contact with Maddie offering her a large smile receiving one in return.   

Once the game began, Maddie couldn't help but let her eyes wander off to look at Billy. Every time Billy made a shot he would look up at Maddie and either smile or wink in her direction making Maddie blush a bright red. Towards the end of the game, Steve had the ball and was being guarded by Billy. While Steve was trying to break away from Billy, it looked like the two were having a heated conversation. As soon as Steve said something, Billy knocked Steve down making a run to the hoop. After making a very unique shot and scoring the point, a guy from his team shouted, "That's what I'm talking about! Whoo!".

Nancy walked into the gym asking to talk with Steve. Once Steve left, the rest of the guys started to head to the locker room, but Billy approached Maddie. Once Maddie saw Billy coming towards her she met him halfway coming down the bleachers. "Hey", Billy said smiling. "Hey. You were amazing out there", Maddie replied with a smile. 

"Thanks for coming", Billy said with a large grin, happy that someone was there for him. "No problem, it was fun to watch", Maddie replied before adding, "I hate to cut this short but I have to pick my brother up". "I'll walk you out I have to pick Max up from this AB club she is doing", Billy stated before walking next to Maddie.

"Are you sure she didn't say AV club?", Maddie questioned with a small smirk. "I'm not really sure", Billy responded a bit embarrassed causing Maddie to laugh. "You know I could pick her up for you", Maddie stated before adding, "She is hanging out with my brother so I won't look like a compete stalker plus you really need a shower". Maddie was smiling while Billy faked a hurt expression. "You think I smell?", Billy asked offended. "Just a little", Maddie teased before giving him a kiss on the cheek.

 "I would give you a hug but you are very sweaty and most definitely smelly", Maddie joked causing Billy to grin sinisterly. Maddie's face paled before she said, "Bills, no". Billy grinned wider before Maddie ran away causing Billy to run after her. Soon enough Billy wrapped an arm around Maddie's waist and pulled her back into his sweaty chest causing her to scream. Both teens started laughing before Billy asked Maddie, "You sure you don't want me to take Max?". "Positive", Maddie responded before kissing Billy's cheek one more time before walking away with a large smile on her face.
