Summary: After a failed mission, the guilt runs high and despite his efforts, you do not let your colleague lend any comfort. When you get back to work, it's time to pick up the pieces.

Warning: nothing really

This is based on a request I got and if anyone else has one, I'd love to take it.

Now, I think if you would just hear me out, you would understand. I made a mistake that I'm very much aware of as I'm sure the rest of the agency will know about it in time. A woman in this field must take risks every day that no other man really needs to consider. I will always have to prove myself in a sea of average men who do as much as almost get their reports in on time. Therefore, I'm also sure they will not understand why I did what I did. It was reckless and lacked any real strategy.

Yet it is not the agency's harsh consequences I'm afraid of. I suppose after being berated enough for my unusual techniques; I've grown rather uncaring of their disapproval. No, I've concluded that it is my own standards I have disappointed and the ones of the people closest to me on the team. There comes to a point where mistakes are simply not allowed, to a point where they are indeed fatal.

I'm positively sure that every agent of SHIELD should trust their instincts as it is what makes us good at what we do. I just happened to put a bit too much faith in my abilities, this time around. To be fair, no one was expecting all this bloodshed.

"Sousa! He went that way," I say as I point down the corridor as well as I'm capable.

"Are you mad, woman? He is gone already and you are wounded."

I watch from the floor as his rushed steps lead him towards me. There are lifeless bodies on the floor and blood on the walls. Still, his gaze doesn't waver as it stays on my numb limbs.

"They're only flesh wounds, I assure you," I mumble under my breath, trying not to let my face contort in every way that conveys pain.

"You're about to bleed out!" he half-yells as he bends down to my level and investigates the damage. His breathing is strained and he seems to be much more alarmed than I. "We'll need to cover that wound and then I'll get you out of here," he continues, a bit calmer this time.

He quickly removes his blazer and hands it over to me.

"Use this to cover your wound."

I take it from him and follow his command without a second thought. Just as quickly, I try to stand up but fail miserably. Sousa gives me a concerned look before helping me to my feet. After a second of reflection, we start walking towards the closest exit.

I'm not easily embarrassed and I certainly shouldn't be in this situation but my missions have never gone this sideways before. If there is anything I take pride in, it's my work. Thus, this defeat will haunt me and I'll hear Sousa's words echo in my head for the rest of my time: "What were you thinking?"
