It was a chant Madalyn Taylor told herself every day. Every day since the world ended. She didn't believe it most times, but if she said it enough times it had to come true at some point. Right?

In one of the few conversations Madalyn Taylor had with her father, he told her while sipping on a beer that this world was shit, and she was gonna have to get over it. There is no prince charming, no magical fairies, no knight in shining armor. This world wasn't going to save her, and it wasn't going to let her save herself.
She was screwed. And that's just how the world was.
Madalyn had believed that, stupidly. But... people do say drunk words are sober thoughts, and Madalyn was a child. How was she to know whether or not her father was wrong? She believed the world was shit (it was), and she was destined to face it alone. But then the world got even shittier when dead people decided they wanted to go for a walk and eat living flesh.
Madalyn truly believed then that there was nothing and no one going to save her. She had to face this awful world alone... just like fate had planned. She had accepted that. Perhaps embraced it even. Being alone meant she could do whatever the hell she wanted to. Who's going to stop her? God?
But Madalyn hadn't expected two men to drive down the road and offer her a home. She definitely didn't expect to find a family in these people. This certainly wasn't the world her mother and father told her about.
