(Y/n) woke up to the sound of her phone ringing, she groaned and reached over to pick it up. She answered it already knowing who it was.

" It's two in the morning, what is it now Tsubaki?" she asked

" I figured we'd go and walk around together," he replied.

" In the middle of the night?"

" Yes, unless you want your brother to see us together?"

She sighed, " Alright, I'll meet you at our usual spot."

I wonder what my brother would say if he found out, she thought to herself as she got dressed.

(Y/n) wasn't sure why Tsubaki had taken an interest in her but she really enjoyed his company and after spending a considerable amount of time together she eventually fell in love with him. Of course, she wasn't sure if he felt the same way she did. That is until he confessed and asked her to be his girlfriend, ever since then they would spend time together whenever they could.

Although sometimes she was afraid her brother would catch her and ask where she was going since things were currently going on with Tsubaki and all his siblings. Lucky for her that never happened and she could easily slip out of the house. Except for this time, she wasn't so lucky because Kuro was watching her from Mahiru's bedroom door that was slightly left open. (Y/n) made her way over to where she usually met up with Tsubaki and sure enough, he was already there waiting for her. When he caught sight of her he immediately went over to give her a hug, she smiled and returned the hug.

" What took you so long?" he asked.

(Y/n) sighed, " Well, I did have to sneak out of the house."

" You have a point, even so, I'm glad I get to spend time with you again."

The two of them spent the rest of the night together before (y/n) had to hurry and get home before her brother woke up. There were times where she wished she could just stay with Tsubaki but with how things were at the moment she knew very well that she couldn't. As she made her way back home she wished everyone could get along together, instead of going on with all this pointless fighting. When she arrived home she sighed and opened the door as quietly as she could before taking her shoes off and going to her room.

" Where have you been?"

She froze when she heard the voice behind her, she turned to find Mahiru sitting on the sofa with Kuro in his cat form beside him.

" Hi, Mahi, I just went out for a walk that's all."

" There's no use lying to me, Kuro and I saw everything."

(Y/n) was at a loss for words, she wasn't sure what she could say at a time like this. She had been so careful not to let her brother find out.

" How long have you two been together?" Mahiru asked.

" Five months now actually," (y/n) replied.

Mahiru sighed, he wasn't sure what he should do about this whole ordeal if anyone else in the group knew who knows what could happen. There was also a possibility that C3 could hold her as a hostage just to get to Tsubaki, he didn't want anything to happen to his sister and yet he didn't want her to be sad if he prohibited her from seeing Tsubaki.

" Am I not allowed to see him anymore?" she asked. almost like she could read his mind.

" Look, I'm just worried about something happening to you, you know how things are right now between everyone and yet you decided to get involved."

"Trust me, I knew what I was getting myself into after you explained the whole situation to me when I found out everything," she said quietly. "But that didn't change how I felt about him."

Mahiru ran a hand through his hair, letting out a slow breath. "I know you care about him... but caring about someone doesn't make everything okay. It doesn't make it safe."

(Y/n) looked down, fingers gripping the hem of her sweater. "But it makes the risk worth it."

Kuro meowed softly, almost like he was trying to ease the tension. Mahiru glanced at him before standing up.

"I won't tell the others," he said after a long pause. "Not yet. But... if anything happens to you because of this, I won't forgive him. Or myself."

Her eyes widened slightly, but she gave a small, relieved smile. "Thank you, Mahiru."

"Just be careful," he muttered, walking past her toward the kitchen. "I mean it."

As the door to her room closed behind her, (y/n) leaned against it and let out the breath she'd been holding. Her heart was still racing-not from being caught, but from the relief of still having her brother's trust.

She took out her phone and saw a message waiting for her.

Tsubaki:
Did he find out?

She smiled softly and typed back.

(Y/n):
Yeah. But it's okay... for now.

And with that, she crawled into bed, pulling the blanket around her shoulders, her heart caught between two worlds-but still beating for one person.

******

Short one-shot, I might make a part two once I figure out how to continue it. I wrote this six years ago and I just found It while going through all my saved stories from my old account. It's pretty short but at the time I was struggling to write anything that was more than 800 words. I've made quite the progress since then so that is something to be glad for. Part 2 will come out soon I hope!

Thanks for reading!
