Nina:

Five months later:

I eyed the small rare diamond in my hands and scoffed. Sometimes even when we possess the most precious things, we feel poor. It does not matter if they are shiny and expensive because what we feel inside would shadow them.

Here I was in Paris, residing in an expensive hotel that had the best view I have ever seen, but I could not bring myself to enjoy it.

I brought out the large box made of glass and put the diamond in its right spot among the other priceless jewels and gems I managed to collect in my free time.

Another sip from my drink burned my throat, but I didn't care. These days, anything that soothed my nerves was welcome.

My phone ringtone brought me out of my thoughts, and I answered it with a sigh. "What do you want, Martin?"

"I have good news for you." He said in his sickening sweet voice.

"Every time you say those words, something bad happens."

"You are hurting my feelings, Nina. I am not that bad."

"Martin, I am tired of your games. My energy is low, and I can't stretch any thinner. Between you and Damian, I am exhausted."

I told the truth. Damian made sure I didn't have any free time between the missions he assigned while Martin demanded sensible data about the Salviatti family. Those two would be my death.

"That's why I said I have good news for you. Your mission is nearly completed. Since we failed to kill Rafaello, Lucca proved to be stupid. He couldn't even get a stupid girl. Anyway, It is time we destroy Damien using his sons. I want you to kill Ethan."

I laughed, yes, I laughed out loud for minutes.

"You went completely nuts."

"Why? Don't you want your freedom? Kill Ethan, and you and your sister will be on your way living the life you have always dreamed about."

"Why him? You know I can kill anyone else but him. Give me another order, and I will complete it." I tried to speak the words as strongly as I could, but by the end, I was nearly begging.

"It must be Ethan. During these last months, he became his father's companion and right hand. He proved to be the son that Damian had always wanted, and I will deprive him of that." Martin answered.

"And then what? He will move on and find another companion and right hand. He might even kill you in the process." I knew I was talking in vain, but  I was damned to let it be.

"It is a risk I am willing to take. You just do your job. The rest is on me." Martin wasn't taking any arguments from me.

"Martin, I won't do it. I am not killing him." I said with finality.

"Because you love him, don't you?" Martin asked.

"No, it is not that. I don't want to destroy another life." I knew Martin wasn't stupid and could tell I was in love with Ethan. But admitting it to him was out of the question. I wouldn't give him this kind of leverage over me.

"Then be prepared to get your life destroyed," Martin said and ended the call.

I dawned the rest of my drink and closed my eyes for a second, then I called the only person I knew would help me.
