Most of the story so far makes Miss Lacey look helpless and weak. Before her injury, she was strong and competent and on more than one occasion saved her Matty.

Hurry. Move. Dried blood. My eyes are stuck. Head hurts. Head sticky. Where is Matty? Hurry, Pain said. Find Matty. Someone under me. Matty? No. No. No. Flailing arms. Wait. Wait, not Matty. Not Matty. Move. Find Matty. Gun. Need gun. Where is my gun? Look. Look. Said pain. Here, here it is. Get up, Pain said. Go find Matty. Hurry, Pain said. He needs you. Save Matty.
I get up, I get moving, I shoot a man stone cold dead, and I save Matty. I save my Matty.
