It's your first week at the Glade, and you're struggling to keep up with everything. There's to much going on and to take in. You're absolutely terrified.
Chuck ends up being your Keeper to train you to be a Slopper. So far you hadn't actually talked to anyone if you didn't absolutely have to, and you didn't ask for help. Even when you needed it you chose to struggle. You were even the first Greenie who was nowhere to be seen during the bonfire. They figured you had gone to sleep until the Builders were working on the Watch Towers the next day. They found you laying there. You were shivering, and your lips were almost blue from staying up there in the cold all night.
"Greenie, this isn't exactly a safe place to hang out,"Gally says, not knowing how to react. You sit up and mumble an apology. He doesn't know how to handle you. The Greenie's usually accept where they are just a little bit. They definitely don't risk frostbite.
"Uh, yeah. Chuck should be waiting for you near the Homestead. He's the only kid so you can't miss him,"He informs you. You just nod and go to find him.
Once you do Chuck is just showing you around. He's talkative despite you not saying a word.
"You're not much of a talker, are you?"He asks.
"I guess not,"You whisper.
"You're going to want to work on that. You don't want to spend everyday alone,"He suggests.
"Okay,"You whisper again, letting him explain things to you. You were doing your best to pay attention when he suddenly asks you a seemingly random question.
"Why'd you sleep on the Watch Tower?"
You just shake your head, but he's way too stubborn to accept that as an answer.
"Were you scared Gally was going to fight you?"He said in a hushed voice.
"My hammock broke, and I didn't have anything to fix it with,"You finally admitted.
"Really?"He asked, surprised that that's the thing that scared you.
"Please don't tell anyone,"You begged.
"But why?"He asked. You may as well have been speaking another language.
"I don't want to be irritating,"You mumble.
"You wouldn't be,"He assured you. You just look at your feet.
"Oh. You're just shy,"He responds. You weakly nodded your head.
"You don't want to have to go through the awkward 'I haven't spoken one word to you, but I need help' thing?"He asks.
"Yeah,"You sheepishly admitted.
"Okay. I can help you fix it back up,"He offers. You nod since he's already growing on you. Maybe he'd be the only one to grow on you. Not that you really minded that.
So during lunch you two head to your hammack. He pulls it back up, ties it, and explains how to do it so you know, just in case it ever happens again.
"Thank you for your help,"You say, your voice a normal volume this time.
"No problem. I'm just glad I get to be your first friend,"He shrugs.
"So am I Chuck,"You say, giving a not so shy smile. You realize Chuck is definitely going to be your favorite person to talk to.
