You're being trained as a new nurse in WCKD. You don't actually know much about your job. All you know is that you take blood, give it to another person, and get a paycheck so you can live another day.
While everyone else is fake nice to the patients (subjects) you genuinely enjoy getting to know them. Sometimes, they understandably don't talk at all. You don't particularly mind this and are in no rush to push them to open up to you. Though usually they're at least somewhat okay with you. After all, you're just as clueless to what happens here as they are.
"Newt. You're next,"You call, disposing of your old gloves and putting on new ones. He skeptically walks in. Minho had already told him about the pretty girl with a kind heart and friendly smile. He was almost gushing, and Minho would never seem like the person to do that.
"Hi. Can you just take a seat right there?"You asked, pointing at a stool. He slowly does as you said.
"I'm Y/N. I'm just going to be doing a basic check up, taking your blood pressure, listening to your heartbeat, testing reflexes, taking blood, and all that. Any questions?"You ask. He doesn't say anything.
"No worries. If you have any just ask away,"You assure him, getting out your stethoscope. He gives you a weird look, and you figure he doesn't know what it is either. Nobody does.
"I'm just going to listen to your heartbeat. I need to make sure it's not irregular,"You explain, placing it in your ears. You put it over his chest and can hear the way his heart is racing.
"Are you anxious? If so we can wait a second so we know your vitals are all good,"You promise.
"I'm fine,"He mumbles.
"In that case take a deep breath,"You instruct. He does so, and you carefully check that everything is okay before making your notes.
"Alrighty. Now reflexes,"You say, pulling your other tool out of your bag.
"It doesn't hurt you,"You add, knowing that a few people have been worried it was some kind of hammer. For some reason he trusts you enough to blindly take your word.
"All normal,"You say to yourself, making another note.
"Where are we really?"Newt speaks up, sure you can give him a true answer.
"Honestly, I don't even know. I'm just here to help out,"You shrug, holding your needle out and making sure it's clean.
"So why work somewhere you're clueless about?"He asks.
"I have to support my family, and I figured I may as well do it in a way that helps others,"You explain.
"You have a kid?"He absentmindedly asks in disbelief. You softly laughed before shaking your head.
"I have a little sister. I just work where I can to keep her fed and well,"You clarify.
"But the world was destroyed. I saw it,"He remarks.
"Yeah, but there are places you can't see on the surface level. It's not the prettiest, but we get enough to live,"You explain.
"Is it far?"He questions, invested in your life.
"It's a good few miles away,"You shrug, now still talking to him even though you finished the check up.
"So you walk here everyday?"He asks.
"It depends on the weather. Depending on where you go maybe you'll get to see my place one day,"You shrug, keeping that genuine, bright smile.
"Maybe,"He replies, not being completely serious but wishing it was.
If only he knew the truth. In a few days he would get to see exactly what your life outside of here was like.
