Your skepticism of him had been obvious from the start and admittedly very cold. Through the entire vent trip, he could feel your eyes burning holes in the back of his head and not just to follow his lead. Still, seeing as you were actually quiet, he decided to just take that as a win. He had a feeling he wasn't going to be getting a lot of those for a while.
“So what? Your proof is that something sort of shaped like a body goes through a door at the same time because of a schedule?”You clarified.
“You don't even find this a little suspicious?”He asked, looking up at you and meeting your eyes.
“I didn't say that, but your proof could be a coincidence. I just don't think that's enough to throw my life on the line for you.”
“I’m not asking you to throw your life on the line for me. I’m asking you to just think about it, just a little bit. This place isn't weird to you? It doesn't just feel like something's wrong?”
“I don't go off my feelings,”You scoffed.
“But you can feel something's wrong, can't you?”He pushed.
“Everything feels wrong right now.”
“Come on. I've seen the way you get when they call names. Nobody just tries to hide in their skin for no reason. You feel that something about this place is off. I know you do,”He urged.
“And what if you're wrong about this? Then, what?”
“But what if I’m right?”
You glanced back at the now empty ground, then up at him. He was looking at you expectantly yet patiently, awaiting an answer. While he was pretty sure he knew what it would be, he would never be bold enough to just assume. Assumptions were only made by fools in his eyes, something he was determined not to be.
“If you're not, then that was a body. Then, staying here really is a death wish,”You whispered.
“So wouldn't it be better to just break out? Wouldn't that be playing it safe?”He reasoned.
“I’m the only one left from my Maze. Breaking out with just you, with no backup, sounds like the opposite of every survival lesson I’ve ever been taught.”
He cringed a little bit at your words, though they were quite realistic. By no fault of his own, he hadn't the best look while here. Not to girls at least.
Damn that table of guys. Where were Sonya, Harriet, and Rachel when he needed them?
“Trust me. I’ve heard the weird things people say, but I’m not looking to hurt anybody. I’m just trying to survive, and I think you would be my best bet.”
“Why me? Why not anybody else?”You question.
“You're smart, you're skeptical of people, and you have a good head on your shoulders. Why not you?”
You stayed quiet, your eyebrows furrowed in thought. Figuring you would need time to think it over, he simply told you he would be here for another day before turning around, ready to pretend he had been sleeping all night.
“Aris?”You called.
“Yeah?”He asked, turning his head to look at you.
“I’ll go with you. To survive,”You clarified.
“Same time tomorrow night, I’ll come get you,”He promised, giving you a nod before going back into his section of the vent, just out of sight from you.
That went smoother than expected. Sure. It was a little, okay, a lot, nerve-racking, but the result at the end seemed good.
