Sophie opened her eyes to find only darkness. Or were they even eyes? She didn't feel, couldn't feel, anything. There were no thoughts or emotions, just existence. Or did she even exist?

But did it even matter if she had or didn't have the answers to these questions?

Sophie had no time to dwell on this in the darkness.

A new sensation came swiftly, coursing through her. She could hear things.

Voices, disconnected and overlapping, yet all strangely familiar.

"I'm sorry Keefe-"

"What do you mean? What do you mean she won't be okay?"

"What's happening, Keefe? Elwin? What's wrong with Sophie?"

"Fitz, do you even care? It wasn't like you did last time"

"I-"

"Keefe, what's happened that I should know-"

"Funkyhair? Where's Blondie? Oh, you are so-"

"Stop!"

The sound haltered.

In another instant, a new sensation came. Sophie had trouble recognizing it at first, but then she remembered.

Touch.

It came from her hand. Something was touching her hand. Holding it.

"She- I, can't feel any emotions," said a voice, nearer than the others.

Genuine silence fell. Nothing but the darkness and the hand holding hers. The hand was also very familiar, but Sophie still couldn't place what it meant.

"What do you mean?"

The next voice sounded sharper, crisper, angrier.

"There's nothing, nothing, nothing....." The voice near her faded away.

Something landed on her hand. A new touch sensation. The thing was wet and small. Sophie had a name for it. It was the one thing she knew, the one thing she remembered, the one thing that mattered.

A tear.

"Hunkyhair-"

"Ro, I think we should leave him alone with Sophie. He needs some time-"

"But can't I stay? You know we're cog-"

"I am full aware that you two are cognates, Fitz. But this does not apply in this situation."

"I-"

"Everyone, please leave. I have made my final decision. Everyone. Out"

The sound of footsteps and a door followed the final remark. Sophie listened, at peace, waiting for more noise.

But she only felt the tears fell harder, the sobs now audible.

Deep inside, something seemed to connect, and as something burst. She closed her eyes again.

Silence.

Sophie opened her eyes.

She was standing on the shore of a beach, the waves brushing softly against her toes.

Strange.

She was fully aware of herself now, but she did not acknowledge this. She could feel herself, barefoot in the sand, tickling her toes.

Sophie was wearing a true blue color dress, which was made out of some simple, flowing material.

Her blonde hair was loose, flowing on her shoulders.

"Foster?" A hoarse voice said from behind her.

Sophie turned to face Keefe.

He was wearing a blue tunic that was exactly the same shade, his tousled blonde hair as it ever was.

His ice blue eyes were glittering, like two pieces of shimmering sea glass.

"Keefe."

"I-" He ran a hand through his hair, distressed.

"Is anything wrong?" She inquired.

"Anything wrong? Foster of course there's something wrong, your," he gulped, "You might not make it."

Oh.

"Is there anything I can do to help you?" Sophie asked, tilting her head slightly.

Keefe's eyes welled up.

"No- what's happened to you? Do you even understand what I'm saying? I just need you to- I just- I-"

His voice cracked. He cleared his throat and looked away.

"Maybe," Sophie said, walking closer to him, and put a hand on his shoulder. "Maybe I'm not who you remember, because you're not the Keefe Sencen I remember."

Keefe looked at her. She smiled at him.

"Foster, I'm sorry. Something's changed- I don't know what. I want to be myself again. But its hard when you're always Fostering it."

Sophie laughed a little bit and rolled her eyes, something deep inside cracking.

"I can't help it. Maybe I'm making stupid decisions because I'm rubbing off of you."

"Hey, did you just say that I, Keefe, would dare do anything stupid?!," Keefe said letting out a dramatic gasp and playfully shoving Sophie's shoulder.

Sophie felt that something break within her. Something came back to her, fueling her.

Sophie knew what it was.

Her personality and her memories.

"Why are we here?," Keefe asked, softly this time.

Sophie shook her head.

"I- don't know, but I know it's all my fault."

"Foster-"

"I thought it was safer for me to run away. But I just can't do anything without making a mistake. And know look at you!" Sophie gestured to him, "You're breaking because of me. The only thing I haven't gotten wrong is that the world would be better off without me."

Sophie hadn't realized she started crying.

"Foster," Keefe said, looking at her. Sophie gulped, pushing back her tears and met his gaze.

He softly reached out and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.

"Foster, there is nothing wrong with you. You are made to be who you are supposed to be, and I love that. The only person doubting you is yourself. There is nothing I'd rather do than be with you. And nothing you do can change that."

Sophie felt herself embrace Keefe, and he hugged her. She couldn't have had a better friend.

A glow came from somewhere deep in her soul. It seemed to light up this strange world, blinding it with light, then.....

Sophie sat up and gasped. She was lying in a bed in the Healing Center. Keefe was clutching to her hand, his expression wide with shock. Someone behind them stepped out of the shadows of a corner.

Mr. Forkle looked shocked as he gazed at Sophie.

He cleared his voice and said, shaking, "It's real then. Adrelices."
