Flashback
July 1981; Los Angeles, CA

"Fear does not exist in this dojo, does it?!" Kreese yelled as he walked in between the rows of students he taught, the students he treated like soldiers.

"No sensei!" the students yelled back

"Pain does not exist in this dojo, does it?!"  Kreese yelled

"No sensei!" The students yelled back

"Defeat does not exist in this dojo, does it?" Kreese asked

"No sensei!" The students yelled

"What do we study here?!" Kreese yelled

"The way of the fist sir!" The students yelled back

"And what is that way?!" Kreese yelled

"Strike first, strike hard, no mercy sir!" The students yelled back

"I can't hear you!" Kreese yelled as he got in their faces

"Strike first, strike hard, no mercy sir!" The students repeated

Throughout practice, one student, Bobby, seemed distracted. One person was on his mind: his beautiful Priscilla. For months, he had been trying to find a way to ask her out, given the fact they were childhood best friends, but he was afraid he would make it strange, now that he had joined karate, he had a newfound confidence in himself. After practice ended, the students were dismissed, except for Bobby, who had been asked to stay behind.

"What is it sensei?" Bobby asked, as he stepped into Kreese's office

"You seem distracted." Kreese said. "What's on your mind? More like who?"

"Well, there's this girl, Priscilla. We've been friends for six years. The thing is, I like her sensei, as more than a friend." Bobby said

Kreese sighed as he leaned back in his chair, then spoke. "Bobby, the first lesson in this dojo is never to be weak. Love is weakness. Never let a girl get in the way, they will only weigh you down. You have to let her go."

Bobby felt his whole world was shattered. He couldn't let his Priscilla go. Not when they had been though so much together. "But sensei, you don't understand... I love her."
