Matt POV
Y/N was laying on my chest when I saw something on her arm.
"What's that from?" I asked, grazing over the bruise.
"Oh, I hit the self in the shower on accident." She said, glancing at it, then looking back at the movie.
It's looks so circular, a shelf would make a line. I waited a moment, then pulled out my phone, adding it to my list. I have a list of all her injuries that seem suspicious to me.
Like when she hit her cheek on a wall, which makes almost no sense, but she was persistent that was what happened. Or when she had a bruise on her shoulder from a book falling off a shelf at the library. This is not counting the ones she tries to cover or the ones I'm sure she successfully does.
She's always had many bruises through the 2 years we've been dating. I only started keeping track in these last few months, when she had her third black eye. She had an excuse every time. But it was too much for me to continue to ignore.
I think it's her dad, her mom, left 6 years ago, when she was 11. Right after her sister was born. I've been to her house only a handful of times, all times but one. It was when her dad wasn't there. The one time was 6 months into the relationship. She had met my family countless times, but I was yet to meet hers. I begged for weeks until she gave in.
He was cold to me and gave her orders. She followed them like a robot. I tried not to think of it much then, but now I need to. Her little sister lives at her grandma's, except one day a week. Thursdays, oddly. She never told me why, just said it was his one term for letting her stay there. Her grandma's house was closer to her school, and her dad works early, so it was more convenient.
Y/N has to take her to school on Friday mornings, so she gets up at 5, so she has time. She loves her sister more than anything. Everything she does is for her. She has two jobs, one after school, and one on weekends. She comes to my house after work. She uses her money to buy things for S/N. It's adorable to watch them together, and she's really cute. She calls me math. I don't know if it's on purpose. She is only 6. She loves coming to my house.
I think I'm going to confront Y/N soon. If he is hitting her, I need to do something. She shouldn't suffer because he's a child who can't control his anger.
I don't want to force her to tell me, which is part of the reason it's taken so long. I've tried to ask her without actually asking her, but she shuts it down. She hides it so well. But if he isn't, why does she always want to be here? She never wants to go home. She sleeps here every Friday and Saturday night, and on school nights, she waits till the last second before curfew to leave.
I need to get to the bottom of it.(Time skip)
"Hey Y/N," I called, walking to her locker.
"Why didn't you answer my texts?" I asked. She sighed.
"My phone's broken." She said, grabbing her notebook.
"How?" I asked, following her to class.
"I stepped on it."
"And that completely broke it?"
"Ya, it won't turn on, and it's shattered."
"You and your 120 something pound body completely destroyed a phone by stepping on it?"
"I guess," she shrugged. I was about to question her, but Chris interrupted.
"You should take me to McDonald's after school."(Time skip)
I can't ignore it anymore. It's Thursday night, so she's at home with her sister. I parked down the street and walked to her door. I rang the doorbell and waited anxiously. She looked surprised as she saw me.
"Matt? What are you doing here?" She asked, holding the door close to her, not letting me see in.
"I haven't seen S/N on a while, I miss her. I would have texted you, but your phone is broken."
"Oh. Well, um. Nows not a good time."
"Why?" I asked on a serious tone. She seemed shocked by that.
"U-um, I, I guess you can come in." She said, glancing behind her and then opening the door.
"Ok, be quiet, my dad's sleeping." She said, grabbing my hand and leading me to her room. Her dad was sleeping in a recliner in the living room, I noticed a small hole in the wall of the kitchen where she tried to drag me faster. I briefly saw the marks on the floor under it.
"Math!" S/N cheered, running and hugging my waist.
"Hey. I missed you." I said, picking her up and giving her a proper hug. She rested her head on my chest and yawned.
"Long day?" I asked.
"Ya, we got to see butterfly's today." She smiled.
"S/N be quiet." Y/N said, glancing out the door.
"Sorry," she whispered.
"We have to be quiet so-"
"So we don't wake up dad, he needs his rest." Y/N cut her off, giving her a look.
S/N nodded. She wouldn't meet my eyes, so I focused back on S/N.
"What else did you do today?" I asked, sitting on the bed. She smiled as she sat on my lap.
"In reading we-" She was cut off by a yell.
"Y/N!" Her eyes widened.
"Uh, ok, S/N, you know what to do?" She nodded, putting her head in my neck.
"Ok, stay here, maybe Matt can help you with your homework." She said, walking out and shutting the door behind her.
S/N climbed out of my lap and went to her backpack, pulling out a paper.
"We're doing addition." She said, handing me the paper. It was simple problems.
"Do you know how to do it?" I nodded. She grabbed a pencil and sat on the floor.
"Come." She said, I sat in front of her, giving her the paper back. I helped her with a couple of problems.
"Do you like your dad?" I asked as she worked through one on her own.
"Yes, why wouldn't I?" She said in a strange voice.
"Does he ever help you with your homework?"
"No. Grandma always helps, and Y/N does when I'm here."
"Do you talk to him much?"
"No." She replied, then held out the paper.
"Is this right?"
"Yes, good job." I said, giving her a high five. She smiled, then worked on the next.
"Is your dad a good cook?"
"Probably not. But I don't know. Y/N always makes me food."
"Do you ever see him?" I asked, slightly confused.
"Well, he always makes sure I'm here on Thursday but never says anything. Just looks at me, and then I usually don't see him again. Y/N keeps me in here."
"Why?"
"Because,"
"Because why?"
"I'm not allowed to tell you."
"You can tell me, I won't-" I stopped as I heard a yell. I couldn't tell the words.
"Does your dad yell a lot?".
"All the time." She said, holding up the paper again.
"Is that right?"
"No. But you're close." She made a sort of pout then tried again. I heard more yelling. There's no way I could be reading this wrong. It's right in front of my eyes.
"Has your dad ever hit you?" She stopped.
"Why you ask." She said with a look.
"S/N, it's really important you tell me the truth." She looked at the floor for a while as the yelling grew closer together.
"But Y/N said-"
"If you want Y/N to be safe, you need to tell me."
"Well, he's only hit me a couple of times, Y/N always tries to protect me."
"What about Y/N? Does he hit Y/N?" I asked, almost certain I knew the answer.
She nodded. I knew it. How could he do that to her?
"How often?" I asked, wanting more details.
"I think every day, but I don't know." She shrugged.
"It's ok, thank you for telling the truth. You're a good sister."
"Can you stop it now?" She asked, finally looking up at me. Tears welled her her eyes.
"I'll try my best." I said, pulling her into a hug, her tiny body shook with sobbs. Who would do this to their child?
"Is he hurting Y/N right now?" She asked with a sniff. I became aware of the yelling that was still going on, now with coughing mixed in.
"I hope not, but I have to go see." She nodded and let go.
"Stay here." I said, walking out. I went twords the yelling which I could now make out.
"You think you can do whatever you want! I'm your father!" There were gasps with the coughs.
"Please," I heard quietly. I ran to the dining room. Y/N was pressed against the wall, tears streaming down her face, her dad's hands around her neck as she clawed at them, trying to break free.
"Let go!" I yelled, his head whipped around as Y/N choked, looking at me with pain in her eyes.
"Who the fuck are you!?" He yelled.
"Let her go!" I yelled again.
"No! She deserves this! If I want to! I will! It's her fault!" He yelled, turning back to her and squeezing her neck tighter. Her gasps stopped as her air was completely cut off.
I panicked and grabbed a bottle off the table, smashing it on his head. He fell to the ground.
I caught Y/N as she desperately gasped for air.
"It's ok, I got you. It's ok." I said calmly, I was freaking out on the inside.
"Matt," she gasped, clinging to me.
"I'm here, it's ok." She caught her breath and rested her head on my shoulder.
"Wait," her head shot up as she looked at her unconscious dad.
"He's gonna wake up. We have to go. Before he wakes up," I nodded, helping her up, supporting her, as she was weak.
"Y/N?" S/N called worried, as she saw her.
"I'm ok, I promise." She said, her voice horse.
"Get your stuff, we're gonna have a sleepover at my house tonight."
"Ok." She got her things, and I grabbed her small hand, helping Y/N with the other arm. As we passed the dining room, I pushed her to my side, putting my hand by her face, hiding the scene.
We made it to my van, and I helped them in, taking them to my house.
"Wait here." I told Y/N. She nodded, and I grabbed S/N, taking her inside.
"S/N? What are you doing here?" Chris asked. I set her down, and she walked to him. He crouched down, and she hugged him.
"Chrissy." She said in a sad tone. He looked up at me, confused.
"What's wrong?" He asked, rubbing her back.
"Daddy hurt Y/N." His mouth dropped, and he didn't know what to say.
"What's going on?" Nick asked, walking out of his room.
"Are mom and dad home?" I asked him.
"Ya, but I think their leaving soon."
"Can you ask them to wait?"
"Ya. Sure."
"Thanks," he nodded, I went back to the van and grabbed S/Ns bag, and Y/N.
"Here," I said, handing Nick the bag as we walked back. He took it and turned to S/N.
"Wanna sleep in my room tonight?" She nodded, looking kind of excited.
"Ok, let's go." He said, grabbing her hand. Chris and Nick watched as I helped Y/N to my room.
"I'll be right back." I said as I put her in bed.
"Matt, there you are. What did you want to talk about, we have to leave."
"One second," I said, grabbing an ice pack.
"Why do you need ice?"
"Gimmie a minute," I went back to my room and put the ice on her neck. It was red, and looked extremely painful. I knew it was gonna leave a large bruise.
"I have to go talk to my parents, I'll be right back." She nodded lightly.
"I'm gonna have to tell them." She nodded again.
"Ok, what is it?"
"It's really serious." I said, noticing they looked kind of annoyed.
"What? Are you in trouble?"
"No. It's about Y/N."
"Oh god, she's not pregnant, is she?"
"What, no." They looked relieved.
"It's, well, she's gonna have to stay here for a while."
"That didn't sound like a question." Dad raised his eyebrows.
"Well, I guess it is a question, but she has no where else to go."
"Home, maybe? She doesn't seem to go there very often." They laughed.
"Guys, please. It's serious." They finally seemed to understand and calmed down.
"She can't go home."
"Why not?"
"Her dad." I sighed.
"What about him? Can he not afford-"
"No, he, he's abusive." I told them, they looked shocked.
"Really? She always seemed so normal."
"She is normal. She just needs somewhere to stay."
"For how long?"
"Till the end of the year, and probably summer to."
"Why is this only coming up now?"
"Because she hasn't told me till now."
"Why did she decide to tell you now?"
"Well, actually, she didn't tell me. I walked in on him strangling her."
"Oh dear," mom placed her hand on her heart.
"She can stay here for as long as she needs." She nodded.
"And S/N needs to stay here tonight. But she go's back to her grandma's in the morning."
"Ok," I smiled and hugged them.
"Thank you," they nodded. I went back to my room and climbed in bed with her.
"They said you could stay for as long as you need." She shook her head.
"I have to go back."
"No, you're not going back there."
"I have to he'll be so mad at me."
"It doesn't matter. You'll never hever to see him again."
"But what about S/N? I can't leave her alone on Thursdays."
"She can stay at your grandmas."
"He's gonna do something about it."
"Why every Thursday?"
"Because that's the day my mom left. He doesn't want anyone else to leave him, even if he doesn't even talk to her."
"Even if he does try, he won't know where to find you, and she'll be safe with your grandma."
"What if he tries to take her from school?"
"Does he know where she goes to school?"
"I don't think so."
"So everything's ok, you can go see her, and you'll both be safe."
"Ok," she gave in, I smiled, pulling her close to me.
"How bad does it hurt?" I asked, peeking under the ice.
"I've felt worse."
"How come you never told me before?"
"I couldn't let anyone know."
"Why? I could have helped you sooner."
"I wanted S/N safe. If anyone found out, they could take her away." I nodded in understanding.
"Do you think I'd be allowed to adopt her?" She asked,
"I-I don't know." I replied, I never thought of it.
"When I'm 18. I have 2 jobs and savings, and I'm gonna take some classes too. So I should be able to right?"
"Maybe,"
"If I tell them about dad, they can't let her stay there though. Can they?"
"I would hope not."
"He shouldn't get to hurt her." She said.
"He shouldn't get to hurt anyone." I replied, she sighed.
"Did he brake your phone?"
"What? Oh. Ya."
"Why?"
"I forgot to make him dinner in the morning, so he threw it at the wall then stomped on it."
"You make dinner in the morning?"
"Well ya. I'm at work at dinner time and I'm here after. So I make it in the morning for him to heat up."
"I think he is the worst human I have ever met."
"He wasn't that bad."
"He tried to kill you."
"He didn't try to kill me."
"His hands were on your neck, stopping you from breathing."
"W-well," she stopped as she didn't know what to say.
"It's ok, he won't hurt you again."
