There were two things my grandfather taught me, two rules that he lived by every day. Mai voltare le spalle a famiglia.

Mai convolto con la mafia.

1) Never turn your back on family and 2) Never get involved with the mafia.

My grandfather's first lesson always seemed legitimate to me, being brought up in an Italian household family was always the most important thing. We did everything together. It was just how we grew up, but my grandfather's second lesson always made me wonder.

My father laughed at my grandfather's second lesson, he always said it was a stupid lesson but the look in my grandfather's old frail eyes told me he knew a lot more about his rules that what he led on and no matter how much I tried to get answers out of him, the stubborn old man never let anything slip.

"Kira scendi le scale la cena è in tavola!" My Nonna's loud voice made me jump as she called me to come and eat.

This was basically a routine in my household, because we were such a close family, we always had Saturday and Sunday dinner together where my Nonna would cook and we would help out. Of course, the little get together led me to day dream in my own thoughts and wonder off around the house while everyone else worked.

"Coming Nonna!" I called back as I hurried to the dining room.

"Kira! Why do you run cara" came my grandfather's voice as he stepped into the hallway ahead of me. His sweet words of endearment towards me made me blush, his thick Italian accent never failing to make me beam at him, there was just something about it that was so up lifting. I also knew never to make him mad then his accent always seemed more menacing and got even thicker if that was even possible.

He was a short tanned Italian man with white hair and large glasses that just made him look so cute it was hard not to love him, but I never let that sweet innocent look of my grandfather fool me because I knew he was no saint. The man could be very hard at times honestly it was amazing how my Nonna had put up with my grandfather for this long.

I smiled and slowed my pace linking my arm through his and kissed his cheek making him smile.

We walked slowly because he was getting older and his legs could only go so fast.

"Nonna called for dinner you know how she gets when I make everyone wait" I explained to him, squeezing his arm gently.

He chuckled softly and patted my hand. His frail hands so soft even after countless years of working on a farm back in the old country.

"Cara if anyone keeps the rest of the family waiting to eat it is me" he smiled brightly showing his teeth.

"KIRA!" came a whine that I instantly recognised as my cousin Michael.

I sighed heavily while my grandfather just laughed. "Michael sure is the impatient one"

I smirked and rolled my eyes. "Grandpa you have six of grandson's that are just as impatient"
