Chapter 20:

Panic rose in me as I stared down at the screen. My heart thundering in my chest as my mind whirled with thoughts of who this message could be from.

Closing the message, my fingers had a mind of their own as I went through my contacts and stared at the one number I never thought I would have to call so soon.

My hands shook as I brought my phone to my ear. The shock from the text message was still fresh and the possibilities of people that could have sent it worried me even more.

After today's events, I was too shaken up, especially seeing as I was never one for gun violence or any type of violence for that matter and then D'Angelo happens to make one appearance at one of my favourite places is held under siege.

"Kira?"

My racing mind full of panic stopped the second his gruff voice answered the phone. His voice was almost soothing, clouded with sleep and I envied how he could so easily find sleep while I had been crying and struggling to deal with what had happened today because of him and the issues I now had with Donavan and my family.

"Kira? What's wrong?" he asked, his voice more alert and I could hear his sheets rustling around in the background reminding me of how soft they were against my skin the last time he had me pinned against them.

I shivered at the memory and pushed the naughty thoughts away as I remembered the reason I had even dared to call him. I couldn't remember when we had swapped numbers but I was relieved that we had because he was the only one that could help me with this situation and not get suspicious.

"Kira?!" he snapped through the phone impatiently shocking me out of my thoughts once again and putting me straight back onto the task at hand.

"D'Angelo" my voice shook "I don't know what to do. I got this text and I-"

"Who sent it?!" he said immediately cutting me off.

"I-I don't know it's an unknown number I-" I stuttered as I pulled my phone away from my ear and put him on speakerphone as I went back to my messages.

There wasn't even a number it just said an unknown number and the messages and I wasn't tech-savvy enough to know what how I could get more information or trace the text if you could even do that. How could you not even get a mobile number if a non-contact texted you? I didn't understand it.

"Okay what did it say Kira?" his voice was gruff with annoyance and anger and I hoped it wasn't pointed towards me, I didn't know D'Angelo that well but I didn't like the thought of him being angry with me – it was unsettling.

"We will come for you Kira Abate" My voice shaking as I recited the text for him.

"Shit" he growled down the line and I could hear shuffling in the background and his feet padding against the hardwood floor.

"I don't know what to do" I whimpered as I stared at the messages, my breathing quicker as panic set in again.

"I'm coming okay Kira I'll be there in twenty minutes just make sure the doors are locked and don't answer them for anything I'll call when I'm at your front door" he said.

I was about to protest and tell him that it wasn't necessary for him to come or that he didn't know where I lived but that moment was short-lived as I heard the phone click shut and the dial tone took over.
