A few nights later we went for an outing and talked all the way back to his apartment, talked about books, talked about life. Talked about people on his shelves. All these killers, these mad men.
"Which are the most interesting," I asked him, and he answered, "Well, certain ones were doing murders for attention, which is a terrible reason to take a life."
Though I laughed and asked if there could be a good reason, I knew of one. It hurt me. I repressed the pain but as we talked more, he asked, "How do you do it?"
"Do what?"
"Be happy."
