We really started to get along after that first day she came to visit. A few weeks later she even invited me to lunch and shopping with her, and I couldn't refuse.
"Better not tell Richard," she suggested cheerfully. "My poor sweetheart seems a bit prickly with me yet."
I didn't know why, but those words coming out of her mouth about Richard—'her' sweetheart. They cut right through me. But I was just being crazy. It was his mom. I met her a few hours later at the Easton shopping center while Richard was working. I felt so excited.
