After his call, Julius returned looking maybe a little stiffer: like he'd taken a boot up his ass, as daddy used to say. I was worried his wife was upset—he couldn't afford for her to find out about Richard, for anyone to find out about Richard, and I was an extension of Richard, so I was a liability. But he put on a good, patient show for me. He was so encouraging. And he said, "Sometimes—people do things that they don't...necessarily regret, but that they're not proud of.
