"Is he why you came back to Columbus," I asked her, and she nodded into her glass.
"I certainly can't think of any other reason." As she laughed, she continued, "But the way I see it, I'm getting on in years. I thought it time. And, Julius' death..." She exhaled, looked almost a little sad. Knowing as I do, I don't believe she was, but maybe she was. I think—hope—that there was a part of herself Susan kept locked up tight. A part that felt things like compassion.
"I was sorry to hear he passed," she settled on at last.
