The next day, when I got home from work, I let out a little scream as I opened the door. There, on the living room table, I found a bouquet of the most beautiful poppies sitting on my living room table. There was a card amid the bursting red blossoms. My whole body ached as I read it, just one sentence broken into two lines:
In lieu of a more personal surprise. Yours, Richard.
My heart beat so fast I thought I would black out. I giggled, then laughed, breathed the smell of the flowers and hugged them and laughed.
