But that was the problem. I loved sin and sinner both. Well—I didn't love the sin, but it excited me. It made me anxious in all the good and bad ways at once, made me feel like I was a lion tamer with my arm up to my shoulder in the mouth of some great beast. It made me feel special. Richard was capable of a thing like this—but yet we lived together, and he never hurt me, was never anything but doting. For the first time in my life, I had self-esteem, and this was how I'd gotten it!
