It was nice to be asked that question. It made me realize nobody really had asked me that question, really. People at work knew my father-in-law died. Richard had consoled me, but figured once the funeral was over, so was grief. Suddenly here we were, three months later, and the mother-in-law I'd never met was taking interest in my well being.
I was almost tired of it, the interest of other people. They were causing me so much pain in their comings and goings. But Richard's mother, I thought, wouldn't cause me pain. I smiled, and told her, "I'm okay."
