34. Back To School

The first day of school. Every student dreaded these days, but I didn't necessarily. I mean, yes, having so many responsibilities and not enough free time is overwhelming, but having something to do is better than not having anything to do.

The previous night I still remember clearly: Shawn and I FaceTimed for about two hours as I showed him my school supplies and he watched, although he was dazed. He would nod along as I spoke but when I asked him questions he became confused. He wasn't paying much attention. I didn't mind though, he was probably just focused on the fact that we were going back to school.

After our call I got my outfit for the upcoming day all picked out, and prepared for my shower. I took off Shawn's promise ring (which I always did before taking a shower because I was afraid it would rust) and stood in the shower for a long time, just allowing the steamy water to beat down on my back, forming a temporary blanket around my body.

After that, I realized I had stayed up much later than I should have and hurriedly went to bed.

It was all planned out: I would wake up, Shawn would pick me up at 7:00 and we'd go eat breakfast before heading to school, so when my alarm went off at 5:30 A.M., interrupting my unusual dream, I wasn't completely shocked.

I got up and put on the outfit I had chosen the previous night: a new pair of skinny jeans and an old band t-shirt that my mom had given me. I left my hair down natural, running a brush through it.

My phone buzzed with a new text implying that Shawn was waiting outside for me, and having just started removing my poorly done manicure, I decided to just leave it how it was and pull my shoes on, hurrying out of the house, bypassing Quentin who was sitting at the table, devouring a bowl of cereal.

I expected Leo was still asleep. Because he had already graduated and was taking a break before he went to college, I didn't think he would wake up anytime soon. It's not like he had anything to take care of, anyway. He had broken his promise of moving out right after graduation, due to lack of money, so he stayed, in his little bedroom in the back of our home. Our parents didn't mind, nonetheless. They weren't ready to let him go to college anyway.

The morning breeze sent chills throughout my body as I rushed to his car parked on the side of the street, his face visible through the darkened window.

I tugged open the car door, Shawn's eyes abruptly landing on mine. A weak and exhausted smile arose on his face as he gestured for me to get in. "C'mon."

I slid into the seat beside him, his lips grazing my cheek as I got situated. "You look great, as per usual." he complimented before we drove off.

It was then that I realized I had left my promise ring at home, I never put it back on after my shower. I just brushed it off, though, of course, it wasn't that big a deal.

At breakfast, Shawn was almost as awkward as he was over the FaceTime call. With his arms crossed over the table, his chin resting atop his hands, he stared blankly at me while I spoke. It was like he couldn't even hear me. It came to the point where I had to call it out.

"Shawn, you're acting weird. What's wrong?" I asked quickly.

He sat up abruptly, startled by my remark."Oh! I'm okay, nothing's wrong. Sorry, just... I'm tired. And going back to school, you know."

"I know. You were just... I don't know, you seemed distracted."

"I am. I mean... I guess. I'm sorry. Um, anyway, what were you talking about?" Shawn said, and the waiter interrupted us, setting our plates before us.

I thanked the waiter and he nodded at me with a smile as he wandered back into the kitchen, and Shawn and I ate in silence.

Once we got to school, several people crowded around us, greeting us and congratulating Shawn on his new career. I didn't recognize most of the people, though. We stepped into the building, and Shawn released my hand.

"I have to go to the office. They... uh... messed up my schedule. It's weird. I'll see you in a bit!" he said as he walked off.

Since class didn't start for the next six minutes, I decided to make a stop at the girls room, just to make sure I look approachable, and good enough to make a decent impression.

I stared into the glass at the farmilar body in front of me, as it copied each of my movements, and seemed to look somewhat nice, even though the dark bags beneath my eyes and the tired expression in which decorated my face wasn't complimenting my appearance.

"Olivia?! Oh my gosh, hey!" a farmilliar voice filled my ears.

"Laur? Oh hi!" I laughed as she yanked me into a tight hug. I had only met Laur once or twice before, so we weren't what you'd call "close" but we were acquaintances, I guess. She was closer to Shawn, of course.

"Hi, Olivia! You look great. I'm loving that outfit! How was your summer?" she questioned politely.

"It was alright. What about yours?"

"It was fun! I went to Puerto Rico with my family and spent a lot of time at the beach. It was amazing. What did you do?"

"Roamed around my house. My parents had to work all summer so I didn't really get a vacation. It's okay though, Shawn and I hung out a bunch, so that was fun." I shrugged.

"Oh, nice! Speaking of Shawn, are you coming to his surprise party tonight?" she said, a wide, excited grin plastered on her face.

Surprise party? For Shawn? What? Why?

"What surprise party?" I asked unsurely.

"You know, his surprise goodbye party. I thought Ian texted you about it?"

"What? Wait-what?" I was baffled.

Suddenly, her smile disappeared and morphed to a look of regret and fear.

"Oh my god, Shawn didn't tell you, did he? Oh shit... oh shit. Forget I ever said anything! I... I gotta go to class!" she blurted quickly, before scurrying away.

What was she talking about? What did Shawn not tell me?
