Red opens his eyes when the can goes dry as his throat. Looks in the rearview mirror. Spots a windmill in the distance.

It's new. Just like everything else in North Dakota. Energy. Land. Money. The ways those three things work together. What they make folks do to themselves. To each other. All new.

He thinks back to his last conversation with Gus. What was it Gus'd said? "Don't feel guilty."

That's not going to work anymore.

Red puts the truck back into drive. Feels the alcohol pool in his foot. It sinks into the accelerator.

The truck makes a U-turn. Red takes a two-track shortcut straight toward Gus's house.
