Sam pauses at the nightstand. The latest edition of the Betrug Bugle perches on the edge. Front page photo shows Sheriff Red. He's in his truck next to a transvestite.

Jane's ace in the hole. Now on display for all of Betrug to see.

Sam picks up the newspaper. Studies the photo. Spends a long time staring at the transvestite. Sets the paper back down.

Red was hard to pattern, as Jane would say. But there would be no loose ends. No potential risks running free in the world. How soon before Jane would come for Wil?

Not long.

The phone on the nightstand rings. Sam jumps at the sound. Looks around before picking up the receiver. Listens but does not speak.

She hangs up. Reaches her free hand into her pocket. Walks toward the shower. Wraps a hand around the Anaconda.

Only two shots left.
