Sam flicks on a dim light as we enter the kitchen. I breathe deep. Look like a doper doing it with a nose coated in white powder. Smells like home.

The lingering aroma of meat and potatoes. The damp cure coming up from the basement. Earth peppered into the walls from a lifetime of prairie wind. Home.

Red calls into the house. Sam keeps the revolver up. Stays behind him. Keeps her back to the wall.

"Gus? You there?" Red says. Wipes the snow from his forehead. "Mary? Hello?"

There's a noise from upstairs. Or maybe it's from in front of us. Sounds more like a raccoon than a person. Too many feet moving too quickly.

"Gus?" Red says.

Silence.

Red turns back to us. "He must be here. No way he's outside," he says.

"I'm right here," a voice says from the dark.

It's coming from the living room adjacent to the kitchen.
