You were standing outside your new school on the first day of your freshmen year which happened to be in the middle of first semester. You brushed off any last minute nerves you had and flipped you hair over your shoulder. You walked over to your locker and put in your combination. Once it was in, you put in your bag and took out a lipgloss you'd stashed in their earlier. You applied some and looked at yourself in the mirror hanging on the locker door. You could see a girl staring at you and she quickly dropped her gaze. You slowly turned to look at her and you were a bit surprised when you saw her. She had the same hair color as you, and it fell in waves down her back just like yours. One of the only differences between you two was that your eyes were deep blue while hers were more of a hazel.

"I like your shoes a lot," She said. You looked down at your feet to remember what you'd thrown on that morning. They were a pair of high heeled boots that were the only pair of shoes that matched your dress.

"Thanks," You smiled brightly. You looked over her outfit to find something to compliment her on. When you stopped on her shoes, you gasped. They were the most beautiful pair of heels you had ever seen.

"Your shoes are amazing," You gushed.

"Thanks, I'm Lydia," She offered you her hand.

"Y/N," You said and shook her hand. She gave you a smile and turned back to her locker. You did the same, pulling out your phone.

You could feel someone's gaze burning holes into your head so you turned around to see if you could see anyone looking at you. When you didn't see anyone, you decided that using your hearing was probably a better option. Being a mermaid really had its perks and better than average hearing was one of them.

"Who's that?" You picked up on a certain conversation. You continued to listen even though you knew you shouldn't be listening.

"Really Liam?" Another voice asked. "That's Lydia, ya know one of your best friends?" They were talking about the girl next to you so maybe they were the ones staring at you.

"No Stiles the girl behind her." They were definitely talking about you. You self-consciously pulled your hair over your shoulder and fidgeted with the ring on your finger.

"That's Lyd- mini Lydia?" Yep, definitely talking about you. While you couldn't deny the similarities between you and Lydia, there was definitely something off about her.

"Oh wait, here comes Lydia. Let's just ask her." One of the boys said. You noticed that Lydia was gone. You took a quick glance around and saw Lydia walking up to two boys. One of them was tall and very attractive. The other one was shorter and now had his back to you so you couldn't see him.

You decided that you needed to stop listening to their conversation. You texted your best friend back home about how you were joining the swim team here and how much you missed your old team. She was the only one who knew about you being a mermaid so you used her as your support system for everything. She was the only person who knew you really. She was actually the one who figured out that you would only have a tail in salt water and not in chlorine water when you went to her crying about how you had to quit the swim team. Needless to say, you stayed on the team and only improved due to your new affinity for water.

"Hey Y/N," Lydia said, scaring you. You jumped slightly and looked over to your side to see her standing there with the two boys from before. Now that you could see them up close, they were both very very very attractive.

"Um, hi Lydia," You said and licked your lips, something you did when you were nervous.

"These are my friends Liam and Stiles." Lydia gestured to the two who had been talking about you. You gave them a tight lipped smile.

"So, are you new?" Liam asked.

"Was the fact that you've never seen me before a dead giveaway?" You said sarcastically. Liam blushed and looked down at his shoes while Lydia just laughed.

"So, Y/N, are you going to play any sports? Sports are a big deal around here." Lydia said with a roll of her eyes. It had been the same at your old school, football and cheerleading were the be all end all.

"I'm joining the swim team." You said. The tall one kept looking between you and Lydia and you knew it was because you looked similar. It was kinda creepy.

"Look, I already forget your name sorry, but I know Lydia and I look similar but if you don't close your mouth, you're gonna catch flies." You said. He immediately closed his mouth.

"I like you." Lydia said and put an arm around you. "Let me go introduce you to people."

Later, at lunch, Lydia dragged you to go sit with her friends. When you two sat down, the others were engrossed in talking.

"Oh hey, are you guys talking about the beach this weekend?" Lydia asked. Stiles, whose name you now remembered, nodded. "We should bring Y/N."

"Oh no, I really don't like the beach." You shook your head. You couldn't go to the beach; it was too risky with the salt water.

"You're a swimmer but you don't like the beach?" Liam asked. You shook your head again.

"Uh, no, I don't like the sand." You said and took a bite of your apple slice to stop the conversation. You heard him whispering to Scott.

"I heard her heartbeat pick up. She's lying." Liam said. You almost choked on your apple. How could he hear your heartbeat? You started coughing and took a gulp of water. You looked up to see the whole table looking at you.

"You okay?" Lydia asked. You nodded and stood up.

"I'm just gonna go to the bathroom." You said and walked away. You could still hear the conversation when you were standing outside the door.

"Do you think she's like us?' Liam asked. You heard someone mutter something that you couldn't pick up.

"No, I would've been able to smell if she was a werewolf. She's something else." Scott said. You felt your heartrate pick up. They were wolves? You had never met anyone supernatural.

"I still think it's weird that she looks like Lydia." Stiles piped up.

"I like her. She's like my little mini-me." Lydia said fondly. You smiled at that comment. You were so happy you made a friend on your first day even if she was older than you. "Let's keep her around."
