Chapter 31: Close To Death

Riley's POV
It's morning and I'm eating breakfast with Stefan, Layla, Greg, Gage, Damon, Jeremy, Gabby, Michael, Mari, Eve, aunt Tanya, Hayley, and Jackson. Eve and aunt Tanya want to spend the morning with me to prepare for the birth. I am looking forward to it, but at the same time, I'm nervous. Within 3 weeks my daughter will be born. After we're done eating, me, aunt Tanya, and Eve head over to the cottage. When we're there, they tell me to get on the mattress and we start their exercise. Eve and aunt Tanya were really helpful with everything. The exercises really helped my nerves. Aunt Tanya says "that's good. Inhale and release" I do as she says then I look to her and ask "I guess this means no epidural, huh? Can't I do this in a hospital? With doctors and drugs?" And Eve says "werewolves have been having babies out here for a long time. You have nothing to worry about. Now, you want to tell us what's really bothering you?" I sigh and say "I guess I'm just scared. I had a lovely mother growing up, but then, she just turned her back on me. I'm not sure how to be a good mother. I don't know if I have the right instincts." Aunt Tanya puts her hand on my cheek and says "trust me. When the time comes, you'll know what to do. I have no doubt that you'll be a wonderful mother." I say "thank you. It's just, as much as I would love to see Nik try and change diapers, I have a feeling I'll be doing this all alone." Eve says "somehow, I doubt that" I smile slightly. I see Elijah appear in the doorway and he says "pardon the interruption. I was wondering if I could have a few words with the conspirators about this supposed uprising."

Me, Stefan, Damon, Jeremy, Gage, Greg, Gabby, Michael, Hayley, and Jackson are in the barn talking with Elijah-- who now knows about our arrangement with Nik. He says "you're making a grave mistake" and Oliver asks "so, you're just worried about us? Is that it?" And Michael says "look Elijah, we know all about your brother's reputation. But, if there's even a chance that these rings can help us take control over our curse-" Ollie interrupts him "our gift." Michael sighs and continues "then honestly, we don't care what he's really after. We won't have to." Elijah looks to me and says "I see. But there are some in the Quarter that consider this as breaking the treaty..." Elijah looks to Hayley "you signed a pledge and you looked me in the eye as you did so." Gabby asks "after what happened last night Elijah, could you blame us for having second thoughts?" And Hayley says "we don't want to fight Elijah" and Gabby says "we just want a better life." He says looking to me "well by having an allegiance with my brother will guarantee you anything, but that." I glare at him. How could he seriously think so lowly of Nik? Nik knows how important my pack means to me and so does Elijah. He should know Nik would never do anything to hurt me. We all heard a motorcycle outside and Jackson says while walking outside along with the others "what the hell!" Me and Gabby follow after them. I stop Elijah for a moment as Gabby keeps walking and I say "look. You may not trust my pack or Nik, but I do. So, if you can't trust my pack or Nik then at least trust me. I have faith in Nik and my pack, Elijah, even if you don't." I walk past him and he stands there for a few seconds then follows after me. A man on a motorcycle stops in the middle of the camp. Gabby, Hayley, and I are in front of everyone. The guy asks "who's in charge here?" And Jackson asks "who's asking?" Michael and Jackson step in front of the three of us. Elijah, Jeremy, Damon, and Stefan didn't like this guy one bit and I could see it. The guy looks to Hayley, Gabby, and I with an evil smirk and Elijah pushes Hayley and I behind as Stefan and Damon push Gabby behind them as well. Jeremy clutches Gabby's hand as she clutches his hand back. The man on the motorcycle blew up and all of us flew backwards screaming and we hit the ground hard.

As I awoken, I see everyone on the ground bleeding and wounded. My ears are ringing and I see Gabby and Hayley next to me, trying to get up along with me. Damon, Stefan, and Jeremy come over to us and help out. Ollie asks "girls, are you okay?" We nod our heads as we get up. Jeremy is helping me up, Damon is helping Hayley up, and Stefan is helping Gabby up. I look at my stomach and hold it, making sure my daughter is okay. We all look around and so many people are hurt and moaning in pain. It looks like a war zone. What catches our attention is a little boy and girl. They're twins and they couldn't be anymore older than 4. They're standing by their father-- who is badly injured and they are crying. We made our way over to them. Stefan says "hey, it's okay. We got you, come on" Damon held the girl as I held the boy. Jackson and Michael run over and Gabby says "boys! Get them away from here" I give the boy to Michael as Damon gives the girl to Jackson. They both leave off with the kids. Elijah comes out of nowhere and says in relief "girls" and I exclaim "Elijah!" We point to the man on the ground and Elijah inspects his wound. It wasn't healing. Jeremy exclaims "wolfsbane! It must have been in the gas tank" we all look around and I say "you are the fastest Elijah. Take him and anyone else who can't walk on their own." Gabby says "boys, please go with him" they look at her like she has three heads. Elijah looks reluctant as well. Hayley says "it's okay, Elijah, we're fine, we'll be safe." Gabby says "they need your help" we run off to find help with Damon, Stefan, and Jeremy right on our tail. I knew they wouldn't listen to Gabby. They're not leaving her side anytime soon. We see Oliver, Tanya, and Eve helping someone. She had a stick in her thigh. Oliver yanks it out as Gabby, Stefan, and I scream "Oliver, no!" The blood was now oozing out of her leg. We run over to them and Stefan says to Eve "put pressure here" and Gabby says "Oliver, give me your shirt, hurry!" Oliver did what she asked and he gave me his shirt. I did my best to make the bleeding stop. Aunt Tanya asks "how did you guys learn this?" Gabby says "Stefan and I picked up many medical techniques over the years" and I say "and I took up medical in high school." Stefan says "this will slow the bleeding down until the healing kicks in" Eve and aunt Tanya take her to safety. We hear a familiar voice call out in pain "Stefan?" We look over and see Layla laying on the ground in pain, bleeding. Stefan immediately vamp speeds to her side and holds her and tries to help her in any way he can. Oliver loses it and knocks some stuff over and throws stuff around. He says "Those damn vampires! Most of them don't even have the guts to do their own dirty work themselves. I mean, why bother? When you can just compel some poor son of a bitch to do it for you. I say we hit them back! Hard!" Gabby and I stop him. Hayley says "stay here, Oliver. We need you to look after everyone until we get back." He asks "where the hell are you three going?" And I say "if this was a vampires doing, then we have pretty good guess on who gave the order." I pick up a branch and snap it in half and I give the other half to Hayley and she gladly took it. Gabby says "we're going to hunt down that son of a bitch, Marcel. I have had enough of him. Clearly Elijah nor Nik was able to get through to him. Now, I'm going to handle it! Like I said I would!" She walks off with me and Hayley behind her. We get to the car and we hear a woosh behind us and see Stefan, Damon, and Jeremy there. Gabby says "guys, please stay here" and Damon says "no way in hell! We're coming with you. The reason any of us came here was to look out for you and protect you and that is what we're going to do. You're my baby sister, I won't risk losing you. Plus, after the stunt Marcel pulled last night and now today, we want in on what's going to happen." Gabby sighs and looks to Hayley and I and we nod our heads. She says "okay, come on. Jeremy choose your weapon of choice" he smirks and he grabs his long gun full of wodden bullets and we all get into the car and head out to hunt Marcel. We are on a murder mission. Marcel has it coming now.
