Sitting with Eliza

as our guest

reminds me of something

(Flashback)

It was just after

we got Justin home

that I went and spoke

with my mother.

I walked into our apartment

and said

"We need to talk."

and she could tell something was up

so she sat

and I told her

exactly what was going on

"Eliza's friend,

and colleague

just passed away

and she has no relatives left,

no boyfriend

or husband

just what she had herself."

She looked at me

with question

"What does this have to do

with us?"

so I started yet again

"She died in Child birth

and before she died

she told asked Eliza

if,

by chance

she were to die

Eliza would take in her child,

and she said yes.

The baby boy,

Justin,

survived

and now Eliza has to take care of him."

She looked

as though

she were in pain

"I feel horribly bad for her,

I truly do,

but I was expecting something about you

that you

wanted to talk about."

I couldn't think

about the irony

of what I thought at christmas

when she warned me against grandchildren

"I went with her

and I told her

that I would be Justin's father

and I would help take care of him,

because that is what he deserves.

I wanted to tell you

and apologize

because I made this decision

without you

and without thinking,
