Chapter 14

That afternoon at the beach ended with a good note, thanks to sweet ole Macy. We haven't talked for such a long time. I believe the last conversation we had - pre-pageant - was when we had this special assignment that we had to work on. So it was quite refreshing to catch up with her.

At home, I ate and rushed doing my homework. Even though I wasn't the sharpest tool, I did pretty well in academics. Unfortunately, I'm having some trouble with Chemistry and I'm afraid grades could get dragged down because of it.

Maybe you could join the tutoring program and, you know, ask for a tutor?

Well, that's definitely a first. The voice over actually gave me good advice, not just sprouting out some degrading insult.

Hallelujah!

I giggled, writing the mental note down, in case I forget about doing it. Afterwards, I got ready for bed. As I was doing so, it didn't surprise me when I received a text from Cindy. She was just asking if I've gone into shock or if I've decided to voluntarily turn myself in at a mental hospital. Typical Cindy, but I give her points for trying.

Waking up the next day wasn't caused by neither Annoying Alarm version 3.8 nor the super morning person known as my mom. Nope, it was actually Taylor Swift, who decided to pay me an early visit, along with singing her songs. I think it was 22 that was playing, but I might be wrong. I try plugging my ears with my fingers, but her voice still managed to make itself heard.

"One of these days, Penny. One of these days I'll smash your damn stereo!" I growled, dragging my butt off the warm mattress. I'm all for music, don't be me wrong, but it was one thing to play music and another thing to cause eardrum murder.

"Hey! I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22..."

I rubbed my eyes, blinking a couple more times before I banged on Penny's door like a cranky old cat lady who was going to complain about how she doesn't like her neighbours' kids messing around with her antique garden gnomes. But hey, at least I was right that the song was, indeed, 22.

"Would you at least turn it down a little?" I yelled and I was suppose to add 'please', but my request was already granted. The volume went down a notch and a smug smile graced my lips. Good riddance.

As I have planned, I handed in my form to get a tutor from the peer tutoring program. Oddly, enough, Cindy had the flu and Charlie was nowhere to be found. It felt really different at our table during break without Cinderella Fellows's usual random antics.

"Hey, is Cindy sick?" asked Benjie, who was sitting across from me.

"Flu," I replied, my face scrunching up a little because I remembered how much she hated getting sick.

"I hope Ethan's taking good care of her then," Diana said with a small, cheeky grin. Oh, that girl is such a romantic. Even more so than me.

I grinned at the lovely pair in front of me. Benjie was a sensitive guy. His soft baby blues and genuine smile are probably what melts Diana the most. And D, she's the one who kind of overwhelms you sometimes. You could just see it in her dancing light brown eyes; the way she tugs on her platinum blonde locks every so often. The two of them balance each other out - like an acid and a base. Benjie is the strong and steady rock, while Diana is the one who leans on him for support. They're so perfect together; a match made in heaven.

One thought led to another, and before I could even stop myself from asking, I said, "How does it feel?"

"Feel what?" they answered in unison, perfectly in sync.
