Chapter- 25 Beautiful Enigma

Keith's pov-

Will the pain ever go? What happened to me was not my fault or was it? I could not believe how anyone could do that to anybody. Don't people have that blood-pumping organ anymore? I clearly remember what happened today four years ago. My wounds are still fresh. It is not that I have not tried to get over it. Believe me when I say that I have tried everything within my reach to stop that pain. Each day I woke up with the same ache in my blood-pumping organ and sleep with it too.

Four years ago

It was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. At midnight I was turning 21 and after my birthday celebration, I will be coronated as alpha of the Heartwood pack. I was preparing for this day since I understood what ALPHA meant. I had sworn that I would be the best alpha to my people, If not better than Dad then at least like him. My dad had died while fighting against rogues when I was 15. He was the most JUST alpha that I had seen along with Uncle Eric. People respected and loved him dearly. In my family, it was tradition to pass the alpha title when the eldest kin turned 21 be it a boy or a girl. We never took sides with either sex. My sister Heather was 5 years younger than me.

So today finally my beta uncle Rick who was best friends with my papa was to be relieved from his responsibility of being pseudo-alpha. He was happy more than me. He also said that after transferring the title he won't go back to being the beta of this pack but pass the title to his son and my dear friend Theodore. He said that it was high time he retired from the Pack business and go traveling the world with his mate.

I was so consumed with my thoughts that I never saw the girl coming my way. As a result, we bumped into each other and instinctively my hands went around her waist to catch her from falling. It was then that I looked into her eyes and saw her for the first time. I realized that what my mother used to say about meeting your mate was indeed true. It felt magical and lasted for a few seconds. She leaped out of my arms and started pacing around. She was cursing but it felt like a melody to my ears. I could not understand what she was saying as I was still in a trance. As cliché as it sounded, I fell in love with her right at that moment.

To me looked perfect. She smelt perfect. She felt perfect.

Then she suddenly stopped pacing and came to stand in front of me. Her pretty face was filled with rage. I was confused and opened my mouth to ask what the matter was when she stopped me by raising her hand and asking me for my name.

God, she even sounded perfect.

After knowing my name for less than a second she rejected me. She did not ask me anything and simply said that she was in love with another man. She said that her man was Alpha and had power. My wolf was clawing my mind to free him to show her our power but somehow I managed to control him. I told her that I too was an alpha but she did not believe me. She was from another pack and was visiting her friend. I asked her to stay the night and see for herself my coronated ceremony.

After the ceremony, I again approached her and asked for her decision. I also told her that if she really loved another guy then I will respect her decision. She laughed at me and considered me a weak alpha. She called me names and abused my love. But when she started to insult my family and pack members I lost it. I accepted her rejection and ordered her to leave my pack at once. Mate or not she cannot say anything wrong about my father and my pack.

After a few months, she came to see me. She told me she was sorry and asked for a chance. I gave in to her thinking about the love that I felt for her. But I was proved wrong. The truth was that she was pregnant with another man's child. Her alpha had deserted her and when she pleaded that she was pregnant with his baby he asked her to spy on me. She agreed and came to me.

Further investigation told me that the Alpha has found his mate and had cast her aside. I told her the truth but she did not believe me. I asked her for the last time to become my Luna. I told her that I will raise the baby as my own if she severed her connection with him but denied it. She mocked me and left. After some time, I found that she had killed that alpha's mate and was on the run.

Truth be told I was shocked and hurt but I could not do a thing. Sometimes I ask the moon goddess why me. I did not even get the chance to show her how much I could have loved her. I did not get a fair trial. She stayed with me for only one week when she came back. My whole pack gave her the respect Luna deserved. They waited on hand and foot for her. I showered her with my love but it was not up to her bar. She always compared me with her alpha and often belittled me saying how different I was from him. She was with me physically but her heart and mind were always with him.

'Snap out of it Keith.'

I blinked and looked at my beta. He was frowning at me. He knew what I was thinking about. I opened my mouth to give another pathetic excuse but he beat me to it.

'Stop mopping around. You deserve better. Did you forget how she treated you or our pack?'

'I can never forget that. She tried sleeping with you and when confronted put the blame on you too. She insulted our pack members and tried to sow discord among us.' I recited with a heavy heart.

'If you do remember then why are you punishing yourself? There are so many fish in the pond. So, go fish.'

I took a glass of scotch from a passerby waiter to soothe my mood. We were here at the 'red moon' pack for the royal meet. Almost everyone has arrived. I looked at the entrance and my heart gave a jolt. Samuel arrived with a woman and she was gorgeous. Her off-shoulder, form-fitting floor-length red dress looked breathtaking. Her hair was loose side swept with a single ruby comb resting on her right shoulder gently touching her beast as the wind flowed.

'Who is she?' Theo asked me, his voice laced with wonder.

My voice was a breathless whisper of admiration and awe.

"Beautiful enigma."
