Jack
"Well, this obviously proves that you suck at pool." I laugh as the black ball eases itself into the hole in the upper right corner.

"I do not suck at pool." Miles says grumpily, he is a seriously bad loser.

"Yeah, you do." I tell him with a grin. This is our second game and he lost this one as well. Ella left long ago, so we have had the opportunity to catch up with each other.

"It's not my fault! It's probably the cue that's different from yours, mine is probably more worn out."

I roll my eyes. "That's bullshit, Miles."

All I get for an answer is a grunt.

"Do you want to stay for dinner?" He asks to change the subject.

"No, I think I should be heading home." I have been here nearly three hours and I am surprised that Karen hasn't hunted me down. I got one more call from Sarah's phone but didn't answer, since I didn't know if it were really Sarah who was calling.

"Are you already leaving, Jack?" Mrs. Miles asks when I come into the hall.

"Yeah, I've got to go." I tell her with a smile.

"Don't you want to stay for dinner? I'm making pasta." She says kindly.

"It's no use, mum, I've already tried." Miles says coming up behind me.

"That's too bad, but promise you will come by some other time, Jack, and remember that you can always come here if you need anything. Our door is always open for you."

"Thanks, Mrs. Miles, that means a lot to me." I tell her truthfully. It is impossible not to like that woman.

"Alright, see you around, man." Miles says and claps my shoulder.

I give him a nod and head out the door to the car.

It doesn't take long until I am back home and knocking on the front door.

"Where in the world have you been?" Sarah greets me with a frown. She looks pissed.

"At a friend's." I tell her boringly and try to enter the house, but Sarah stops me.

"You were supposed to be home at four, I waited for you." She says puzzled.

"Oh look, she remembers." I say dryly and try to pass her, but she puts her hands on my chest. Questionably I raise a brow. I try to ignore the warm feeling that spreads in my torso when Sarah touches me. I shall admit that I am still pissed about what she said this morning about getting a break. No chick has ever said that to me.

"What's your problem?" She gazes up at me with narrowed eyes.

"You are." I say huskily and use every inch of self-control not to kiss those beautiful lips.

I have had a crappy day and all I want is to bury myself in her and forget about everything. But first I want her to desperately take back that bullshit she said this morning.

"What did I do?"

"Oh, you know pretty well what you did."

"No, I don't. Please, enlighten me." Sarah says folding her arms and now looking pissed off.

"No, you're just going to have to figure that one out yourself." I say and push her to the side and step inside.

"Jerk." She breathes angrily. "Mum is pissed off by the way, I would hide if I were you."

I just shrug at her and take off my jacket. Before I even have started on the shoes, Karen steps into the hallway.

"Where in the world have you been?" She is mad all right. Karen's tone is clipped and cold.
