I cannot believe that I'm standing in front of the history teacher with Hawthorne next to me right now.

"I don't want to be Silver's partner," Rowan huffs at him.

"Now, I'm not immune to the rumors going around the school about the two of you," the teacher gruffly admits, his hands folded in front of him. "But you both have the highest grades in my class, and I'd be interested in seeing what you can come up with for our final project. Are you both going to be difficult?"

I exchange annoyed looks with Rowan and hold back a sigh. "We'll try our best."

Rowan snaps his head over to face me, clearly irritated by my quick response, but I just roll my eyes at him. We don't exactly have another choice.

"Are you serious, Silver?" he snaps at me, once we leave the room. "I had gone in there, planning on getting my partner switched, and you just agree to go along with it?"

I flash him a cross look. "We wouldn't have gotten our group changed. He just would have lowered our grade for being testing. For once, can't you try critically thinking?"

"Says the guy whose grades are lower than mine."

He wants to start an argument, does he? "If I tried, I'd be up there with Anna."

"I'm already up there with Anna."

"I'm going to kick your ass."

"Try me." Rowan smirks at me, before suddenly seeming to remember something. "Oh, by the way, Anna was picked up Sawyer already. She said that she was headed over to my house."

I press down the sudden flush of anger that runs up my chest. No. I'd promised Anna and myself that I wouldn't get upset over this anymore. Plus, at least he had the decency to tell me. Instead, I just place a hand on my forehead and ask him, "Do you really think that was a good call?"

"Why not?" he asks dismissively.

"Well." I remove my hand and raise an eyebrow at him. "Last time I went into your house by myself, I came across something that I probably shouldn't have."

Rowan's head swivels over to face mine in a brief moment of confusion, before he curses under his breath. "Let's go, Silver," he orders, rushing for the building doors. "This isn't good."

A sense of foreboding runs through my veins as I follow him out into the parking lot.
