I press my foot against the gas pedal aggressively. Of course – how could I have been so stupid? Someone as curious as Anna is bound to be exploring every crevice of my house by now, and there are some things that she shouldn't see.

Kai's car is following right on my tail as I make a beeline for my house. If it hadn't been for him, I probably would have forgotten. At the same time, I'm just praying that he's not right.

"Hawthorne!"

I slowly exited the door and came face-to-face with Kai. He had a look of pure anger on his face. I'd never seen him like that before. He walked up to me and dropped a folded piece of paper in my hand. "Explain this," he growled. "Explain this to me right now."

I didn't have to open it to know what's inside. A chill went through my spine. "What do you want me to say?" I asked flatly.

Kai just let out a dubious laugh. "Wow. This is a great day for you, isn't it? I caught you with my sister, and, at the same time, now I caught you with that." He raised an eyebrow at me. "Was it fun, pretending like you didn't have any idea what was going on for the past several years?"

I put the piece of paper in my pocket and just stared indifferently at him. "What are you trying to say?"

"You don't deserve to get close to me or my family," Kai replied through gritted teeth, putting his face close to mine in pure, unadulterated anger. "You hid this from me the entire time, and used my friendship to get a good look at what your father did, right?"

I shoved him away from me heatedly. "Shut up, Silver."

"I can't believe this." Kai just laughed again. "You're a piece of shit, you know that? You're absolutely unworthy of being in our presence."

I looked him directly in the eye. "I wholeheartedly agree."

I recall seeing the news on the TV screen as I sat inside the police station. The screen showed a picture of the man with the dusty brown hair and the intimidating green eyes. I shuddered to myself. I was eight years old, but I knew danger when I saw it. And he was dangerous.

The screen flipped to a picture of a young girl. She had a mess of dark, blackish hair falling around her face.

She was the one who lost her parents.

From that day forwards, I swore that I would protect her.

For as long as I can remember, I've been watching. Watching to make sure that she's okay. Watching to make sure that nothing else happens to her after what already did. I know how she feels. I know where it comes from – the pain, and the suppression of it. But she always puts a smile on her face. She's so, incredibly strong.

I admire her for that. I'm always around her, but I don't tell her this. Because she doesn't know it herself. I feel as though she thinks she's just another victim trying to hide her emotions. But she's much more than that.

She's beautiful.
