"Hey Jake, it happened again."

I cried, wiping the tears off my cheeks as I waited for him to reply. I heard him sigh. Jake was one of my closest friends—actually he was my best friend. He was always there to comfort me whenever I had something to say.

But he was gifted, in a weird way. A peculiarity was what they called it. He could see the hollows and he would sometimes tell me about this home in Cairnholm, Wales, where peculiars lived so they were safe from the outside world. I was intrigued by his stories, and he'd tell me that I too, was a peculiar. I always felt like I didn't belong here, so hearing that I wasn't the only one with an odd "gift" made me less upset.

"I know, Y/N. I heard your parents were at the hospital so that's why I called. What happened exactly?" He asked.

"I injured mom," I sobbed into my pillow, "I'm a monster."

"You're not, okay? It's not your fault so stop blaming yourself," Jake tried to comfort me, and even though it always worked, it didn't anymore. No matter how hard he would try—telling me that tomorrow would get better, I knew it wouldn't. It will never get better especially if you have a demon living inside of you.

"You should get some rest. Call me if you need anything," He told me as I replied with an "okay" then hanging up.

I closed my eyes, hoping that I'll forget about this by tomorrow.

The sun escaped through my curtains as I removed my arm from my eyes, immediately getting blinded by the light.

I groaned as I checked the time.

6:21 am

School was in an hour and 30 minutes, but I wasn't planning to go. I picked up my phone from the bedside table and scrolled through my contacts, finding Jake's easily.

"Hello?" Jake answers, his voice raspy. Must've slept late. Typical.

"Hi." I giggled, realizing that I had woken him up. "I won't go to school today,"

"Why not?" He asks, his voice laced with confusion.

"I'm afraid, Jake. I don't wanna hurt anyone else."

"Okay, I suggest you stay inside then," Jake laughs. "I know how much you love to take walks."

"I do, but I can't. I'll leave you to get ready for school. Bye." I told him, smiling.

"Take care," He says before hanging up the phone.

I placed my phone down as I tied my hair in a bun. "Gruff?" I called, he was usually there to wake me up.

"Yeah?" Gruff appears through the door moments later with a grin on his face. "I heard your parents talking, they arrived earlier this morning."

I looked at him with a nervous feeling. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I listened to him.

"They're sending you away."

Tears brimmed my eyes, and not soon after, I heard a knock on my door.

"Y/N? You awake?" It was my mother. Gruff rushed to the top of my shelf, where he always stayed when my parents would come in. He whispered to me about wiping my tears away.

"Okay, okay," I sighed, standing up to let my mother enter. I looked at her. She had bandages all over her leg, but other than that she was okay.

"Mom, I'm so sorry—"

"Shh, Y/N. I'm okay now. It's not your fault." She smiled softly, taking my hand in hers when I yanked it away.

"I don't want you to get hurt again." I spoke firmly as she nodded. "Me and your dad have something to tell you," I gulped.

"You're sending me away, aren't you?" I cried.

"Y/N, I really didn't want to. You're my daughter and I wouldn't want to see you go, but this was your Dad's choice and it seemed the best." She hugged me tightly, rubbing my back as I cried into my shoulder.

"Where are you sending me?" I asked, pulling away.

"To Cairnholm, Wales. Jake will be going with you, but he'll return in a week."
