"I-I need to tell you something."
I furrowed my eyebrows in response, confused as to why he suddenly became secretive. Gruff and me always had that special bond, ever since I was a kid, and the closure caused us to never keep anything for each other.
"The spirit who possessed you... she isn't a demon." He looks at me with an undescribable expression.
"Are you shitting me? We know for a fact th—"
"I'm not kidding."
I gaze at him in disbelief. He was serious. He wasn't kidding.
"Then explain why it acts like a demon? Or is that just me?!" I demand and I see him flinch—it was almost like he was afraid of me. My expression softened as I waited for him to respond.
"Listen Y/N, I'll explain that later, but—" Gruff paused, gulping. "The spirit—s-she's my sister."
I didn't say anything, but I wasn't going to run. I wanted to stay and listen.
"When we were younger we used to always sneak out to the village nearby and mess with the humans. She found out one day that we could possess people. I hated it—I really did—but she thought otherwise."
"You mean, you could've possessed me but you didn't?" I asked dumbly as he rolls his eyes.
"Yeah, I chose not to. It was wrong, and I knew that making fun of the humans in the first place was even worse. So when my parents found out about her doings, they trapped her inside that box you found in the cave."
"And you followed her?"
"Of course, because the thing is—Auttie couldn't control herself too when she possessed someone. So she spent hours in the village practicing herself to be able to gain full manipulation of the human she was possessing. That's how my parents became very suspicious of her, because it would be 3 am by the time she would arrive back home. I was worried by then so I followed her. And it was then that I realized that she had caused way too much trouble. Auttie couldn't get out of the person's body for hours and she would be very worn out by then, so I helped those humans by talking to them, but in reality I was only helping her." Gruff took a deep breath and I sat there with my jaw dropped.
"Is she... here? Now?"
"I, I really don't know." He looked down at the ground, obviously sad because of his sister. "She never stays for long after possessing someone. I know she's mad at me, for the reason that I always stop her before she could control you. Ever wonder why I don't wake you up anymore?"
"I do... You're looking for her aren't you?"
"I am. I always am, because I'm worried that—" Gruff stops himself, tears streaming down his face as I took him into my arms. "—that I'll never get my sister back."
I almost cried at his last sentence. I could see the sorrow in his eyes. All he wanted was his sister to forget about gaining possession of someone's body and be back to her old self. The old self that Gruff wanted.
"I'm sorry, about all those things I said. I didn't know there was a story behind it," I breathed, pulling away from our long, comforting hug.
"It's okay. I'm okay." He smiled sadly.
"Maybe you could ask her. Ask her to stop."
"Trust me, if I could, I really would." He sighed.
"I can see her, right?" I queried. Of course I can, I'm an idiot.
