"Beautiful child,"
I want to say to your mother.
My maleness prevents me,
so I continue to sip my coffee
and eat my toast on Main Street.
What would your mother think?
Best to mind my own business.
My own mother would never hesitate;
she always 'reached out' — always.
But she could and I can't.
Because I'm a man?
Or because of the colour of your skin?
No, it's the colour of my skin!
"Beautiful child," I would like to say,
but I am white and you are indigenous,
and I'm a coward.~ gtk
