the noise in the kitchen
drowns the words from tv
I'm about to complain
when the thought occurs
— soon you'll be gone
to school in the city

when days from the future
have come and passed
the metallic clang of lids
the bang of wood doors
replaced by the din of silence
pronouncing a stage passed
and me that much older
I'll miss that infernal grating
all that clanging and banging

so I choose to say nothing
because I will sorely miss
all that damned noise
coming from the kitchen
