Knowing You Are in the World

Travelling back towards you
Along this asphalt ribbon.
I began this morning
Where it began for me,
And begins the Sioux;
Not quite Leander and swimming
Hellespont to return to you,
Nevertheless I pine to be home.

And now, after many hours,
As the sun leaps past me
To penetrate my windshield
With blinding photons,
Fatigue and loneliness mix
To concoct a sensual dream
That both hastens and prolongs
The time between us.

I imagine our years together;
Our earliest meeting, and
Those sweet, hesitant moments,
Unsure of ourselves
And each other;
How we grew as one, how
I came to depend on you
And you on me.

Each experience, each trial,
Each child, each home,
Each became a living thread
Woven together to fashion
The fabric that clothes us,
To become our tartan, our bond.
Knowing you are in the world
Sustains me, secures me,
Provides solace in
My bourgeois life.

But now my love
No Hero shall you become;
This prairie, this Hellespont,
Will not be my demise
And tear this fabric,
Of our lives asunder;
And dreams guide
Me back to you.
