Prairie Winter Sunset From The Driver's Window

Speeding across the Saskatchewan prairie,
focused on the ribbon of highway ahead,
urging the miles to pass faster, the
idea of sunset penetrates the glass at my shoulder
before the physical image jolts my senses
and compels me to turn my head, and witness
the magnificence of this flat landscape;
white snowy foreground is dark in silhouette,
blurred by its proximity as I speed along.
But the purple! The purple fabric that is
the clouds, punctuated with orange fluff,
like pilling wool fibres on a worn blanket,
blaze yellow as clouds approach the horizon
above a narrow slice of fulgent sky;
my passing ignorance becomes scrutiny,
as my eyes feast to distraction upon this
perfect artistry that can never be again.
