Certainty

Rules repel.
"Rules no longer rule," they say.
It's different now, this parent role, I play.
Things seemed so certain in the past;
Parents, my parents, knew what they were doing –—
Didn't they?
It's so less certain this day,
            In this uncertain world;
But I prefer to give advice — it is my way.
I give advice, where my parents gave rules
And rebel I would, — still
"Rules are rules," they were certain to say.
They were certain it seemed.
Weren't they?
Rules repel today.
They shut us down and we walk away.
No rules today, no rules, no way.
Advice is better, advice I say.
Those tears, oh tear upon tear
On full display.
My advice comes across as certainty, I fear.
As if I stated it as a rule,
As if I stated it assuredly,
Regardless of what I want to say;
            And it repels,
Because rules repel,
Just as they did in my parent's day.
