Meeting Place

I met today with many others,
to celebrate a life well lived;
a life shortened by ailment
like so many that can scourge
the health of human beings —
indiscriminating, affecting all,
the detestable, or as this man,
a giant among his peers,
a man of honour, a man revered.

The human condition is unchanging;
we live with worry, we live with fear,
we invent upon invention, and
we can't decide our terms for our existence.
We make believe and create our stories,
it was this way in the beginning,
it is this way today.

Hence here I am at this meeting place,
another of our inventions,
for God created the earth and the heavens,
but it is man that created Him.
