Refugees of Reason

vigilance my gardening friends

carrots are all show above the surface
it is below their true nature is revealed;
when left alone to their own devices
their true character is a twisted one;
above, all is lovely green, absorbing energy
from the air and from the soil below;
they wave easily in whatever direction,
for it is the capricious wind blowing
that decides which way to lean; then
watchfulness, for amongst them, hidden,
weeds are especially inclined to grow,
robbing the soil of all that is vital,
establishing themselves before one's notice,
and then much more difficult to remove
when caught, uprooting the good with bad,
vile things tearing destructively at the ground,
resisting arrest like a wild insane criminal
that grabs at all nearby objects
as it is hauled off to justice, wrenching
the very ground that sustains all growth,
and worse, if not entirely removed,
lies dormant to arise once again;
— so vigilance my gardening friends,
use caution to create the garden bed,
soon on, permit the room for growth,
water and nurture the growing plants
and remove early the noxious weeds
that sap the energy from the land
