I Do Not Weep For You

You weep for your lost traditions,
But I do not weep for you.
Your flags and statues
Symbols of oppression;
Invite legitimate condemnation.

You weep for your lost entitlements,
But I do not weep for you;
For your ancestors
Were often privileged
At the expense of those enslaved.

You weep for your lost rights,
But I do not weep for you.
Your rights were wrongs
Against humanity,
When lives traded as property.

You weep for your lost prospects,
But I do not weep for you.
There shouldn't be guarantees
For skin colour, religion,
And sexual discrimination.

You weep and show much anger,
But I do not weep for you,
For there is too much at stake
To repeat once more;
We've seen this news reel before.

I weep for Heather Heyer,
Her family and all her friends.
I weep for those she touched
And all she was and was to be.
I weep for all civil society.
