Back, Again

Sophie was halfway to her petit white home when a male voice forced her to come to a complete halt.

"Stay away from high walls or anything taller than a footstep." Nathan leaned against his car, with his hands crossed over his chest.

Sophie couldn't help but laugh a little. She turned to face him, "That means I'll have to buy a ladder to get on my bed or something."

Nate chuckled deeply, while looking down at the ground. When he looked up at her, that awkward moment when their eyes met forced him to look away. "Bye Sophie. Maybe if we meet again.. That is a maybe, but hopefully never..." Sophie waited to hear something, anything nice come out of his mouth. A word perhaps that would start up the smallest bit of emotion of actually missing him. "I'd want you to stay the same. Don't change..." and he continued, "because boy will I miss crushing the glory in your little self with my super comebacks or whatever. We should meet up so we could argue and I could win you know." He smirked.

Sophie narrowed her eyes at that comment, unsure on how to respond. She couldn't tell if that was a nice comment or just plain rude. "Pardon me?" Sophie blinked several times. "Did you just say you would miss me?"

"Not precisely..." Nathan huffed.

"But you said it!" Sophie smiled. "However, I would like to clarify that if we do meet again... I will outright ignore you. Do you know why?"

Nathan arched an eyebrow. "Cause you hate me or something?"

"Yes that... but also becuase ignoring you would show my superiority against your need to talk to me again, and that would probably be the greatest insult you have ever recieved. Thus end of all arguments." Sophie nodded in satisfaction.

Nathan nodded his head slowly, quite amused at her response. That would be the best form of insulting something. He was totally going to use that comment on someone some day. "Fair enough." He gave a quick wave before turning around.

Sophie was mindblown at his silence and acceptance. She couldn't believe Nathan of all people didn't say something back. Deciding to ignore it, Sophie slowly walked up her stairs. Trying so hard not the look back at him. To see if he was still there. She turned the knob and was finally able to fight the temptation of looking.

Sophie took a big whiff of the smell of her tidy house that was left untouched from when she was here. The annoying part was that the sofa still had the small stain from her coffee from the morning of departure. She rubbed her forehead in stress and decided that it she was going to clean till it was gone or else that exact coffee stain would ruin her sleep tonight. On her way to the kitchen she  couldn't help but tilt her head back a little to peek outside to see if he was gone. For a second Sophie thought that Nathan was still standing on her driveway, but soon realized it was just one of those paranoia moments.

For the next 15 minutes she sat, kneeled on the floor, with a wet cloth scrubbing back and forth on the only damage on the neatest house on the street.  Every now and then Sophie would look at the clock as time ticked away.

Once the stain had soon faded, Sophie sat down on the couch and hoped for something to happen. She slumped forward and decided that instead of wasting her time she could cook something to eat.

After eating a bowl of spaghetti that tasted nothing like the Turner's food, Sophie decided to take a nap. The only problem was that she couldn't sleep. After hours of sitting, eating snacks, sitting some more, taking a shower, and walking around the house, Sophie came to one big conclusion; she was bored. She hated how she had to admit to herself that she was actually, in all honesty, missing Nathan's massive mansion, the company of his family, and just maybe the annoying yapping of Nathan's voice too. This empty house in which she lived seemed even emptier after the week long 'vacation' from the outskirts of town. For some reason Sophie couldn't bring herself to just relax. Instead she found herself wandering the place like a lost puppy.

The phone suddenly rang, and Sophie ran to receive it from half way across the room. She spread a huge grin on her face as she answered the call, hoping it was someone she could talk to and kill some hours with. "Hello?"

"Sophie Alexandria Walters! You have been away from work for days! Who gives you pay? I do! And you only get pay if you work! I expect you bright eyed and bushy tomorrow morning. Any excuse will be intolerable. Do you hear me?" A husky Russian accented woman yelled from the other line.

"Oh! I'm so sorry! I was away, I didn't even know it would have took this long! I'll be there tomorrow, promise!" Sophie gasped as she had the fear of losing her job.

Jilliana and her husband Billardivich, owned 'Bill and Jill's Burgers', which meant that they had full authority to kick Sophie's irresponsible butt out of the restaurant, and Sophie's butt really needed to stay and get paid. "You better be! I'll see you tomorrow." And with that the lady hung up.

Sophie gave out a great big sigh. She hated her job, but it was the only place that was willing to hire a 17 year old, at the time, with absolutely no skill level. Sophie had spent 5 years working to sustain the life she has now. Truth is, Sophie envied the Turners for having such luxuries when she had to sweep the floor in order to have food on her plate. For goodness sake she didn't even have a radio, let alone a TV, so complaining was acceptable in this circumstance.

Sophie looked up at the photo of her brother Daniel. She thought to herself of how much fun he would have had riding in one of Nathan's expensive cars. He was such a freak for anything with wheels. By the tender age of 8, he knew absolutely everything about how the car worked to what colour most people preferred. Back then, Sophie would be irritated by his constant talk of the same subject, but now all she wanted was to hear his voice once more not caring what it was he talked about.

Sophie gently touched the picture, trying to bring back memories of her brother and remember the smallest details of his face. She just hoped with all her heart that she could undo what she did that night, 5 years ago. Everything would have been so much better for him, for her mom, for everyone. But she couldn't. All she could do was get some money until she had enough to go to New York and make it better than before. Atleast she knew if she did this, Daniel would forgive her. And she could forgive herself for half of the mistake; the other half was unforgivable.
