â€Â¢ Chapter 16 •

Luke

I sit on the corner of Dakota's bed. I'm so bored. I'm so upset. I'm so confused.

"Luke?" I look up to see my best friend with a piece of paper.

"What's up?" I ask. Dakota takes a seat next to me on her lilac bed, and shows me the piece of paper. In bright, colourful letters are the words 'Kota's Bucket List.' What? Don't people do this when they're like 30?

"I want to do this," she says.

There are quite a few things that aren't crossed out, and I skim through it.

"Okay, which one?" I say, "and it can't get us arrested."

Dakota laughs and smiles. "I'm going to miss you," she mutters.

I assume she's talking about the tour... well we won't be too long. "You won't notice I'm gone," I say.

"That's not it but anyway... Hannah gave me this number to a local pet rescue place. I've got the money, I just need a second opinion," says Dakota. She gives me a hopeful smile and I shake my head, laughing softly.

"Okay Dakota, let's go get you a puppy," I say.

When we get to the animal rescue place, Dakota giggles with excitement. She really wants this. "Let's go, let's go," she says, pulling my hand toward the door.

The warm shop has got me happy, so now I really don't care. "It's getting cold out yeah?" asks an old lady.

"It is," says Dakota.
"How can I help you young kids?"
"I'm looking for a puppy," says Dakota.
"Well in the back we have some dogs recently rescued, you can come take a look."

Dakota takes my hand again and we walk to the back of the shop to see about 6 dogs in cages against a wall. They're barking and wailing as we go in. I walk directly to a little white West Highland Terrier. "Look Kot, it's like the Cesar's dog," I say, poking my finger through the holes.

"That is adorable," says Dakota, coming to me and playing with the dog.

"That's Rosie. She came from an abusive home, but she is 100% healthy, and she can be taken home right away," says the lady.
"What do you think?" asks Dakota.
"I think it's cute," I say.
"She's great with other dogs, and seems to be very playful yet respectful in appropriate times."

I look at the old lady. "I've got a black lab at home, do you think they'd get along?" I ask.

"Why of course, Rosie loves other dogs. She's a socialite, very sophisticated," says the lady.

I smile. The thought of walking and playing with Molly and Rosie would be fun. "I think I'll get it," says Dakota.

"Great, come let's do some paperwork," says the lady.

Soon, Rosie is sitting in the back of my car, well actually running around and finding places to sit while we get back to Dakota's. "She's so excited. Can you believe she's only 2?" says Dakota.

"I can't, I also can't believe you just bought a dog. Your mum will kill you," I say. Mrs Williams hates dirt. She's one of those clean freak people. Even her spices are put in an order only she understands.

"I'll take care of her," assures Dakota. I smile at my best friend, when we are at a light, and then we finally get back.

When we do, I say hello to Mrs Williams, and then Dakota walks in with Rosie in her arms. "Oh my God! Dakota what is this?!"
