• Chapter 19 •

(By far my favourite chapter!)

Renn

I sit on the kitchen counter watching the waffle maker do it's thing. Making waffles early in the morning before I have to go out and do actual stuff is my favourite thing to do. Especially when now, I'm sharing a unit with my best friend.

"Good morning Sunshine!" Jana exclaims, looking extremely dressed up for an interview.

"I thought you had an interview at a bar, not a strip club," I tease.
"Hey! I gotta look good," says Jana.

How cliché, Jana has an interview for a bar and grill near campus, all she needs is the Prince of Denmark.

"Hey um Renn? Do something fun," says Jana, heading out the door.
"I mean it!"

She leaves and rings me to keep her company while she drives to the bar.

"Actually Luke asked me to hang out with him," I say.
"And?" asks Jana.
"I don't know, should I go?"
"You've been bored for the longest time. I think it's time you had fun. Plus, it's Luke."
"So? It's Luke?"
"Gosh Renn do you need me to say it? You have the biggest crush on him!"
"I do not!"
"Oh please, don't lie to me now."
"I'm not!"
"Then why do you always kiss?"
"We don't- okay I don't know, he initiates them."
"And why do you play along?"
"I don't know! Heat of the moment?"
"Oh please, you're saying because I'm on a bridge, in the heat of the moment I will just jump off?"
"Possibly!"
"Renn, come on just give him a chance. Don't shut him out this time."

I sigh. Last time I shut anyone out, I lost a great friend.

*Flashback*

I poke the straw through my frap's lid and turn around to almost bump into a cute, tanned brunette.

"Florence?" he says.
"Dominik?" I say.
"Oh wow, it really is you... um how are things?"
"They're alright, how's it back in Parramatta?"
"Oh man, we miss you heaps. Ever think of coming back?"
"I wish, but you know things at home."

Things with Dominik were often awkward after I left. A month before Year 6 ended, I had avoided him. I felt that if I ignored him, he wouldn't mean anything to me anymore. But I had the strongest feelings for him, and he was actually one of my main reasons I refused to leave Parramatta. When I finally left, he didn't say goodbye, he didn't even look at me and I cried myself to sleep that night, and every night until I finally forgot everything about him.

"Ah I see, I don't mean to meddle but no boyfriend?" asks Dominik. I wave my hand as if saying 'don't worry' and I laugh.

"No," I say, "I don't think I will have one for awhile."
"Bad break up?"
"Actually no break up at all. No one really likes me, and I don't really like anyone."

Dominik nods and his name is called for his coffee.

"It was good seeing you Renn, see you around?" he says, putting a straw into his own lid.

"Definitely," I say, and he leaves, me following but I go the opposite way.

I don't remember much about Dominik. He had the popular kid status at my old school. But that was pimary, it is probably heaps different now. Dominik loved to run track, and he was good at it too. He had the fastest time in the whole state, and we had this big assembly just to recognise his accomplishments.
